A Message from Dr. Smith
This week has been an exciting week of school spirit and the kick-off of our after school program. Teachers and students participated in a door decorating contest and had fun dressing up for each of the theme days. On Thursday over 600 students attended our annual kick-off party for the After School Program. They had fun snacking on the food and playing various games that included a dunk tank that featured many of our administrators, including myself! We ended this eventful school week with exciting pep rallies for the middle school and high school.
Next week our golf team advances to Regional play at Laurel Hill Golf Course on Thursday.
I hope to see you all at the Homecoming festivities and game tonight (see below for schedule of events). Come out and support our various clubs and organizations at Bite of Braddock and cheer on our Bruins at the game!

School Attendance
Lake Braddock Secondary School is committed to our student’s success. One way to support your student’s success is to ensure they attend school on a regular basis and arrive to classes on time. When students miss days or arrive late to classes they are missing valuable instructional time that adds up over the course of the year. As part of our continuing effort to support our students, starting October 14th, the school will begin to send home regular communications to parents and guardians when a student arrives unexcused tardy to a class. The automatic attendance communications for absences will still continue. Our goal is to keep parent and guardian’s aware of their student’s attendance and to support their students to be on time to all their classes. If you need help to support your students attendance please reach out to our High School Systems of Support Advisor, Amy Soos (AMSoos@fcps.edu) or our Middle School Systems of Support Advisor, Scott Darwin (SCDarwin@fcps.edu).
Volunteers Needed for Annual Vision and Hearing Screening on
Monday and Tuesday, Oct 21-22, 2019
The LBSS health room will be doing vision and hearing screening on all 7th and 10th graders and we need parent volunteers to help out. It is a great opportunity to volunteer with several 1 ½ to 2-hour time slots to choose from. Dig Pink Volleyball
Lake Braddock Volleyball will be sponsoring a Dig Pink Volleyball game on October 1. Freshman and JV start at 5:45 p.m., Varsity at 7:00 p.m. against South County. There will be a bake sale, raffles, and a silent auction. Donations will be taken in person at the game or through online donation at Lake Braddock Dig Pink Fundraiser https://giving.side-out.org/campaigns/16039#/
All proceeds earned will go towards the Side-Out Foundation. The Side-Out Foundation raises funds that go toward clinical trials specifically for patients with stage four breast cancer; the most advanced form of the disease and the least funded area of research. Arts and Crafts Fair
Be part of a great Bruin community event!! We are currently looking for artists, crafters and other vendors for the annual Arts and Crafts Marketplace that was a huge success last year! We’ve moved the date to early November to avoid the last minute December rush. Student club space for fundraising is also available…don’t miss out!!

LBSS in the News
LBSS JROTC Places 2nd at West Potomac HS Raider Meet!
The LBSS Army JROTC Raiders Team took second place out of 14 Schools with 27 other teams that met at the West Potomac High School Raider Meet this past Saturday. Our Cadets pushed hard at the all-day competition and it paid off! The events were the modified Army Physical Fitness Test that consists of one minute of push-ups, one minute of sit-ups and a one-mile run. They also competed in a hummvee pull, medical litter carry obstacle course, one-rope bridge, logistics relay, and a 5K run in uniform and equipment. Congratulations to Captain Guardo, SFC Wiles and LBSS JROTC students: Cameron Wood, Caden Weidanz, Logan Landrum, Luke Landrum, Lincoln Landrum, James Parks, Cameron Crutchfield, Sasith Nallaperuma and Kennedy Brid. We are extremely proud of you all!

Music For All National Concert Festival
The Lake Braddock Secondary School Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band were both selected to the prestigious Music For All National Concert Festival to be held on the campus of Butler University in March 2020. This is the first time in Music For All’s history that a band and orchestra from the same school have been selected in the same year.
It is a very selective acceptance process. Bands, choirs, orchestras, and small ensembles from across the nation send anonymous recordings to a committee for adjudication. Ensembles are selected solely on the basis of their performance on the recording. Numerous ensembles from across the country apply for this incredible music experience. The selection process is very difficult but very rewarding for the selected ensembles. Mr. Mike Luley, Director for the Symphonic Band, and Mr. Austin Isaac, High School Orchestra Director, are very excited for the opportunity this experience will give to our students and the wonderful collaboration they will have together.
Music For All hosts a non-competitive atmosphere for the students, creating a great sense of collaboration amongst all students and clinicians. Our students will receive a summative assessment from nationally acclaimed adjudicators and a post-performance clinic from one of our field’s brightest music educators. Additionally, students will participate in masterclasses with professional musicians on the students’ individual instruments. As part of the event, the students perform for each other allowing the students to hear the work being done by others from across the country. This year’s event includes some outstanding ensembles from Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Colorado. It is a learning experience of a life time.
Thank you for your continued support of music education in our school as well as our county. These wonderful opportunities are a direct result of your support.
We will be having a Winter Holiday Donation Concert on Monday, December 9th at 6PM to help raise funds for the trip. We hope that you can join us in celebrating the seasons and this great opportunity.

Science Olympiad Information https://www.soinc.org/
Lake Braddock Middle School Science Olympiad Tryouts will be held on Tuesday, October 1st from 3:00-4:30pm in the Lecture Hall. Both 7th & 8th graders are welcome! The tryout format is a Scantron multiple choice test. Please bring your own pencil. Seriously! That is the first test! There are 22 spots available on the team. IF you make the team, REQUIRED PRACTICES ARE TUESDAY AND THURSDAY EACH WEEK.
Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation.\

Python Game Development: Grades 7-8
Open to students of all experience levels, Python offers a great entry-point to learn a versatile, professional level programming language. This class teaches everything from basic syntax to more complex concepts, such as object-oriented development. These tools will be used to create a variety of games, like space invaders and tic-tac-toe. Sign up for class and learn how to creatively build your own games with Python!
Web Development: Grades 7-8
Have you ever wondered how a website is created? Find out how in our Web Development class! Whether you are new to coding or an expert developer, there is something for everyone in this class. We will help you hone your skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as you create awesome websites or fun games. Those with no prior coding experience will start off with an introduction to coding concepts using Scratch but quickly transition to programming JavaScript. Ready to start coding? Sign up!
3D Game Development: Grades 7-8
3D Game Development spans a wonderful mix of creative problem solving with coding and artistic expression through 3D Modeling & Animation. Students will learn tools and techniques used by the pros to create 3D games such as Fortnite, learning to artistically model, animate, and cleverly program. This class will cover programming with javascript and help develop 3D spatial and visual cognition, while inspiring students to develop at their creative best!
