Did You Know…Binge drinking is the most common, costly, and deadly pattern of excessive alcohol use in the United States. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism External defines binge drinking as a pattern of drinking that brings a person’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) to 0.08 grams percent or above. This typically happens when men consume 5 or more drinks or women consume 4 or more drinks in about 2 hours.
As the homecoming festivities approach, talk to your teen about dangers of binge drinking. Make sure your family has a safety plan in the event your teen needs help.
Junior Parking Hang Tag Lottery Information
Junior parking hang tag lottery will be available after 9:00 a.m. on Monday, September 16th through Friday, September 27th.
Visit MySchoolBucks and click on the parking permits icon.
Students must submit: A copy of their driver’s license, signed and completed application, and signed rules form.
All financial obligations must be clear before payment will be accepted
The drawing will take place the following week of Sept 30th. Notification will be made and hang tags distributed by Oct. 4th.

Are You Using Technology or is Technology Using You?
Technology is here to stay and social media is a place to connect, share and express our feelings. It is also a place of self-comparison, constant fear of missing out and a way to channel our addictive tendencies, which can be harmful for mental health. What’s going on behind the screens? While we are more connected than ever, it’s hard to know if technology is helping us or hurting us, yet we do have a choice when it comes to managing the way we use technology.
As part of a yearlong focus on social media wellness, the Safe Community Coalition, in conjunction with the PTSAs of Langley High School and McLean High School invites you to a free community showing of the compelling new IndieFlix Original Documentary “LIKE” ― Thursday, October 10 in the Langley High School auditorium and Tuesday, October 15 in the McLean High School auditorium. Both showings are from 7:00-8:30 p.m. “LIKE” explores the social impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to educate, inspire and equip us to self-regulate. After the film, discussion will be led by Dr. Cliff Sussman, a DC-based psychiatrist and expert on helping people achieve a more balanced relationship with digital technology.
This event is free and recommended for adults and students of any age who have phones.

PSAT Day - General Information
The PSAT will be administered to 10th and 11th grade students on Wednesday, October 16th.
- No registration is required. The PSAT is *free* for all 10th and 11th grade FCPS students.
- PSAT day is an early release day for students (12:55).
- PSAT practice materials can be found online at www.collegeboard.org. 10th and 11th grade students have already received a “PSAT Student Guide + Practice Test” via their English classes.
- PSAT testing locations will be posted on Google Classroom sites on October 9. Students with accommodations will receive testing time and location information via their FCPS Gmail accounts on October 9.
- Students will need two #2 pencils (mechanical pencils not allowed) and an approved calculator…see Google Classroom sites for approved list.
- Please contact Ms. Dabroski (jldabroski@fcps.edu) for PSAT/College Board accommodation requests.
FCPS is no longer administering the PSAT 8/9. 9th grade students will participate in a high school transition program on October 16th.
PSAT Pre-Survey
At the beginning of the PSAT, students are presented with a voluntary pre-survey that asks questions about a variety of topics. Parents have the opportunity to preview this survey, and to opt out, if they choose to do so. Parents/guardians may view the pre-survey questions and access further information about the opt-out process via the “PSAT Pre-Survey Opt-Out Policy” public webpage at: https://www.fcps.edu/node/36639. Pre-survey opt-out forms must be returned to Janice Dabroski, Assessment Coach, Langley High School by COB Friday, September 27, 2019. If you choose to opt your student out of the pre-survey, please be sure your student knows they should not answer the pre-survey questions at the beginning of the test.
PSAT Day Opportunities for Seniors
On October 16th, LHS will host for 12th grade students, “College Essay Writing” assistance with English 12 teachers in Rooms 2425, 2427, 2627 and 2628 from 8:30-11:30 on a first come, first served basis
AP Exam Fee Structure (New!)
Starting with the 2019-2020 school year, the College Board is launching MyAp, a digital platform which includes new AP test ordering timeline, fee structure and instructional resources. As a result, FCPS had to adjust the AP Test Opt-Out timeline and fees. AP students must now make Opt-out decisions for AP tests in October 2019 and parents will be billed in December 2019 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests. Per College Board’s new fee structure, AP students that do not sit for a registered AP test after November 15th 2019 for reasons that include forgetting to opt-out, dropping an AP course, not sitting for the test on exam day etc., will be assessed a$40.00 change fee. Please be sure to review the materials on the LHS website.

Weekly Progress Reports
All parents of HS students who have registered for a SIS Parent Account and have a primary email address recorded in SIS will receive Weekly Progress Reports. Login to your SIS Parent account to verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the My Account tab. If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports and click on update account.
Weekly progress reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email.
For questions about a specific progress report or grade you can login into your SIS Parent Account to find detailed gradebook information. Additionally, your student’s teacher is always the best resource to answer any gradebook questions that you may have.
