Message from the Principal

Principal Theresa Khuluki

Dear Wolftrap Families:

At this time of the year I am often asked by parents for help in understanding the curriculum that will be covered throughout the year at each grade level. FCPS has created a digital drop-down tool for parents to learn more about the elementary standards and benchmarks by grade level and content. It is accessible by clicking on Elementary School Academics on the FCPS public internet. Once on this page, please select the grade level you would like to learn more about. Inside the grade-specific page, you may visit any of the linked pages for an overview of programs of content.  For a deeper dive into a specific content, click on View the ___Grade Program of Studies (POS) button. Within this page, you may click on any subject (i.e., mathematics, science, etc.) and a drop down by standards and benchmarks will appear. I hope you will find this information helpful if you would like to see the specific content your child will be learning this school year.

As a reminder we will be hosting an Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Parent Information Night on Tuesday, September 24, at 5:30 PM. This is an opportunity to learn more about the levels of service available in elementary, middle and high schools in FCPS. A more detailed session will take place in December regarding specifics around the Level IV AAP pool and referral process. As always, Ms. Newman welcomes questions at srnewman@fcps.edu

This week we kicked off our first character trait as a part of the Positivity Project, curiosity. I have been thoroughly enjoying the class discussions about this trait, what it looks like, and how this trait can help us be open to learning other people’s perspectives. The following descriptions can be used at home when discussing the idea of curiosity with your child:

  • You like exploration and discovery
  • You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything

For the week of September 22nd, we will feature “teamwork,” and the week of September 29th, we will talk about what it means to be “open minded.”

During my Back-to-School Night address, I mentioned the display board outside the library which contains a link to short one-minute videos from our staff. I wanted to provide the link if you would like to take a few minutes and hear from our staff why they are excited for the school year and why they love teaching: https://flipgrid.com/+wesmywhy2019

Thank you again for all that you do to support our staff and students on a daily basis. Don’t forget that International Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 2. I hope to see many of you walking or biking to school!

Sincerely,

Teresa Khuluki

From the PE Department

Mr. Bechtle and Mr. Serone have created a P.E. Twitter page for parents and the community! Follow our Twitter handle (@WolftrapPE) to see pictures and videos while staying up to date on all the activities in our gym. PE has also begun placing collegiate flags on our walls. If you would like to donate your alma mater’s collegiate flag to decorate our walls, please send it in.

From Dr Grove - Adventures in Sidewalk Safety

Some of you may have noticed how congested our front sidewalk can be at arrival and dismissal. Mr. Bechtel, our PE teacher and patrol sponsor, has developed an idea to have walkers exit the building at door 3, which is by the butterfly garden. I invited the FCPS safety and security office to look at our plan, and Mr. J.J. Banachoski visited with us to talk about our vision. He has submitted an estimate to extend a sidewalk from the side of the school to Talisman, a little farther back from the front sidewalk. We are currently looking at options to fund our new sidewalk. Stay tuned for details as they emerge and thank you to all of our teachers for constantly looking out for the safety of our students. Any safety concerns? Contact Dr. Grove.

Wolftrap PTA

What a terrific start to the year with Wolftrap Under the Stars and our first PTA Meeting & Welcome Coffee, Friday Sept 13th! We had packed attendance and great weather- thank you to the many families and volunteers who came to have fun and support Wolftrap. A special thanks goes to Ghaffari Orthodontics for sponsoring the event and the Lombard family for providing the event signs. We look forward to keeping that excitement going for the rest of the year!

At our meeting we approved the 2019–2020 PTA budget, available here. Multiple committees highlighted their programming and opportunities to get involved, as little or as much as you like. If you missed it, check them out here!

Throughout the year, you’ll find our minutes and agendas posted to the PTA website. Please note, minutes are posted after they’re approved at the following meeting. Of course, please feel free to reach out anytime with questions as they come up.

Join the PTA: It’s not too late! We are thrilled to have 77% of staff and 50% of families joined as PTA members. This is SO close to the 60% of families that joined last year! If it’s been on your list, please remember to join and support all the wonderful programming at Wolftrap. Joining is also the only way to receive a paper directory for the year, which will be coming out this fall.

There are lots of great events happening in the upcoming weeks. Be sure to read the entire edition of the Connection so you don’t miss out!

Your PTA Board,

Jessica Jue, President (president@wolftrappta.org)
Christine Harney, President-Elect (president-elect@wolftrappta.org)

During the transition from the traditional Box Tops to the new digital ones, you can “double dip” by clipping the paper ones AND scanning your store receipt! Learn more at www.btfe.com

Odyssey of the Mind

Does your child think so far outside of the box that they’ve never even seen the box? Do you have a budding writer? Costume designer? Engineer and builder? Do they feel at home on stage or performing for a group? Odyssey of the Mind might be just the thing for them! There will be a Parent Information Meeting on Tuesday, October 1st at 7:00 pm in the Wolftrap Library. Come learn the difference between long-term and spontaneous, Primary vs. Division I, and team meetings and commitments. If you are ready to sign your child up for a team, we will share a link at the meeting to get you started! Questions? E-mail odyssey@wolftrappta.org.

Safe Routes

We are proud to announce that Wolftrap's Safe Routes to School program was just awarded a $1,000 grant from the State of Virginia!  These funds will be used to encourage more students to walk/bike to school and to help improve the safety of those doing so. Per grant requirements, these funds must be spent during the school year.  If you have any suggestions, please let me know: peterwintermute@gmail.com

Reminder:

Please do NOT drop off/pick up students along the school side of Talisman between Beulah and St. Roman.

Reflections

Important things to know about REFLECTIONS:

The Reflections Contest is a National PTA competition where children reflect on a particular theme and create a project in one of six areas of the arts to submit.

Children are allowed to submit multiple entries in separate categories. They cannot enter multiple projects in the same category. For example, a student can enter a drawing and a photograph, but not two drawings.

Children do not have to be an “artist” to enter! We encourage children to explore their creative sides. This contest is about creativity and interpretation of theme, not about how well you draw. Additionally, drawing is only one of several categories. The categories are photography, filmmaking, dance choreography, music competition, writing, visual arts.

The due date is October 18th and all work must be submitted with an entry form in the main office.

Official rules, information, and entry forms are available on the PTA website, and hard copies are available on the table in front of the main office.

Please contact Tara Holtaway with any questions at tara.holtaway@iCloud.com.

Wolftrap's Artist in the Making Series

The Wolftrap PTA is so excited to roll out the new evolution of supplementary art for our students, a new program call Artist In the Making (AIM). Starting in October the new AIM program begins a quest to develop life long art lovers by teaching the masters of art and giving each Wolftrap Student an opportunity to learn new art techniques with a variety of art mediums.

Parents, join us for our first Art JAM of the season on October 2nd at 8:45 AM in the cafeteria, where you can learn how you too can help teach our students how to become life long art lovers. We are kicking off this program with one of the godfather's of art, Michelangelo. We can't wait to see you there!

Feel free to email aim@wolftrappta.org with any questions
