Academically Advanced Programs at Forestville

                                                            By Shana Twitchell

I am delighted to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year at Forestville! A new year always brings exciting and new opportunities! I am looking forward to sharing these with your child.

Fairfax County Public Schools offers a continuum of gifted services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Program of Studies. Teachers, administrators, and Academically Advanced resource teachers work together to provide the following Levels of Service:

  • Level I services provide lessons in critical and creative thinking skills for all FCPS students in grades K-6.
  • Level II services include differentiated instructions at an advanced level for many FCPS students through collaboration between the classroom teacher and the resource teacher. Middle School students who take one to two honors classes are receiving Level II services.
  • Level III services for identified students include the AAP school-based program in grades 3-6; in middle school, students take three honor classes.
  • Level IV services are for those students found eligible for the full-time Academically Advanced center program in grades 3-8.

                                        SCREENING

Multiple criteria are reviewed to determine eligibility for all FCPS gifted services. Formal identification begins with level III services. The local school AAP committee determines student eligibility for school-based Academically Advanced services. The countywide AAP Central Selection Committee determines eligibility for Center placement (Level IV).

                                                TESTING

Each October/November all FCPS second grade students are administered the Fairfax Ability Test (formerly known as the Cognitive Ability Test). A second grade screening pool is established using these test results. Students in the second grade pool are automatically screened for possible Level IV placement. First grade students will complete the Naglieri Nonverbal Test. Students in third through sixth grade, who are missing an ability test score, will be given the Cognitive Ability test. Parents/guardians may exercise their one-time retest option during the October/November testing cycle. If you would like your child re-tested, please contact Shana Twitchell, srtwitchell@fcps.edu.

Fairfax Ability Test will be administered here at Forestville between:

October 1st-3rd.

The Naglieri Test (NNAT) will be administered here at Forestville:
