Greetings VRES Families!

Fall is finally here!  This is a beautiful time of year to appreciate nature in all of its splendor.  By the way, appreciation of beauty is one of our Positivity Project character traits.  Students will learn more about the appreciation of beauty in the upcoming months.  In the meantime, I hope you will find time to take a nature walk, go apple picking, or enjoy cleaning up the leaves in your yard!

We are very excited about our upcoming school-wide events.  Our PTA will host Harvest Festival on Friday, October 25, 2019 beginning at 5 pm.  We look forward to spending time with all of our families and encourage everyone to come out and have a good time.  Additionally, teachers are eager to share student progress updates during parent/teacher conferences scheduled at various times in October and on Monday, November 4th.  If you haven’t already done so, please schedule a parent/teacher conference with your child’s teacher as soon as possible.  Finally, as a way to embrace our theme, We Are 1 VRES, we will be hosting Mix It Up at Lunch during the latter part of the month.  Please stayed tuned as more information about this fun and special occasion will be sent home in the upcoming weeks.

Finally, our school will be celebrating Columbus Day on Monday, October 14, 2019.  This a gentle reminder that school will not be in session.  We will resume classes on Tuesday, October 15th.  Have a safe and wonderful holiday!

See you soon,

Ms. Bumbrey

Instructional Time

This is a gentle reminder for parents…

To preserve the instructional environment, parents may not visit classrooms during instructional times during the school day.  Teachers’ primary responsibility during the school day is to provide instruction and, as a result, teachers are not available for impromptu parent meetings or drop-ins.  While we love for parents to have an opportunity to visit their children at our school, we ask that you schedule meetings in advance or plan to visit with your child during lunch.  Parents who arrive unannounced in the classrooms will be directed to schedule a conference with your child’s teacher at an appropriate time.  For more information, please refer to the "Meeting with Teachers" section in the Virginia Run Student Handbook found on our website.  Thank you for your support!

REMINDER

October 14, 2019 is Columbus Day. NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS!

Already volunteered and looking to meet your fellow committee members to get started on planning? We will also devote time to committee meetings and assist with coordination and planning! Hope to see you there!

Veteran's Day Collage

Every year at Virginia Run, the 4th graders put on a Veteran’s Day assembly to honor our Veterans from every branch of the military. As a way of honoring our Veterans from the Virginia Run community Ms. Berg, Ms. Adkins and Ms. Tuben will be putting together a collage of pictures of Veterans, past and present, to display the week of Veteran’s Day (November 11). This collage will be on display in the main lobby. Feel free to email Ms. Berg (jmberg@fcps.edu) a picture of a Veteran from your family. If you have several Veterans in your family, we welcome multiple pictures. This is for ALL Veterans past and present. If you have a relative who did not return home from their service, please know that we plan to honor these servicemen and women in May for Memorial Day. Please submit all photos to me by Friday, November 1st. If you have any questions please contact Ms. Berg. Thank you!

Fundraiser for Hurricane Victims

Dear Region 5 Communities,

Each of the 32 schools in Region 5 of Fairfax County Public Schools are uniting together to support the humanitarian crisis that has occurred in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian. We have all witnessed the devastation from this deadly storm and we want to be able to help. There is an estimated 18,000 children in crisis and many children have lost everything they own. So we are calling each of our communities to action!

Over the next two weeks, we will be fundraising by using a GoFundMe page. The link is below which also includes a link to a video for more information. All proceeds will go to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Our funds will go to water, shelter, food, clothes, backpacks, books, and other school materials.

Please join Region 5 in making a difference. Any amount can be helpful! The fundraiser will run from Wednesday, September 18th to Friday, October 4th.
