The state of Virginia has made SCHOOL ATTENDANCE a priority!
|
- Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
- Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
- Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available. Find more attendance data, here.

Structuring Your Home For School Success |
You are your child’s first teacher!
As a parent, you already provide for your child’s basic needs. Here are more ways to make your home a learning place.
Let your children know you expect them to work hard in school. Model positive attitudes about school and learning.
- Check your child’s backpack daily for notes from the school and homework assignments.
- Home-school communication is key to a positive school experience for all.
- Read books together, tell stories or visit your local library. Libraries sometimes have read aloud time on the weekend and evenings. Children get excited to have their own library card.
Instilling a love for learning in your child will set them up for a positive educational experience.
Lice Resources for Parents and Guardians
The beginning of school is a great time to provide information to parents and guardians regarding head lice and its treatment. Although lice do not spread disease, they can be a nuisance and cause great concern in the community.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have provided several resources for parents and guardians who are interested in learning more about lice. These documents are available in English and several other languages at the following links:

School Bond Referendum to Be on November 5 Ballot
A school bond referendum will be on the general election ballot Tuesday, November 5. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents of Fairfax County may vote if they are 18 years or older on Election Day and have registered to vote 22 days prior to the election (on or before October 15, at 5 p.m.).
Bond sales, a form of long-term borrowing, are used to finance the building and renovation of schools and must be approved by voters since they are a future obligation for taxpayers.

Helping your Child Cope with Stress
As parents, we want to shield our children from stress and adversity as much as possible. However, we cannot protect them from everything; everyone will face challenges in his or her life. What we can do is give them the skills necessary to face those stresses and challenges head-on, to learn from them, and to grow in strength and maturity as a result.
Join Dr. Lisa Bateman, Clinical Psychologist, in this important session that will focus on:
- Recognizing stress in children
- Building resiliency skills
- The role of mindfulness and executive functioning skills
