Message from Principal Magliola
Dear Jackson Families,
When I say LUTHER, you say JACKSON! We held our first pep rally this week and the atmosphere in the building was electric and our teachers were masterclass in how all considerations were made to ensure our kids had a blast! Games, friendly competitions, and positive sportsmanship allowed all students to actively participate and take pride in the moment. We even had a few former LJ Tigers come back to us as members of FCHS and share the teams they were on when they were at LJMS.
I want to share a couple of thoughts with you that have been highlights for my week and I hope they resonate with you as you reflect on the experiences your child is sharing with you when they come home each day. You may recall one of my priorities in joining Jackson was to work with our staff in continuing to make student learning visible at Jackson. As we realize our vision at Jackson and transform the learning experience for all students, we our intentional in generating feedback from our students regarding their thoughts and feelings about their own experiences with us. We want to know if their views match our own in what we intend for them to experience and how we can further help our students become active learners and effective thinkers eager to create, innovate, and solve problems.
As I am spending time in more and more classrooms, talking to both teachers and students about the teaching and learning taking place, the aforementioned thoughts guide my daily work in our building. I encourage you to gauge the view of your students through their own words about their learning.
Sincerely,
Michael Magliola, Principal

CogAT Testing Window Opening
The CogAT is a group-administered test that measures general intellectual ability. In Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the CogAT is used in grades 2-7 as a part of the screening process for Advanced Academic Program (AAP) services. Information from the assessment also may be considered when making instructional decisions for student differentiation needs, such as access to advanced mathematics coursework in elementary school and middle school.
In Grades 3-7, the CogAT can be administered to:
o Students who have no abilities test score on file
o Students whose parents/guardians elect to use their one-time retest option
If you are interested in your student taking the CogAT, please contact your student’s school counselor by September 23.

Every Day Counts! Absences Add Up
FCPS is looking forward to a great school year! Regular attendance is essential for students to form positive peer and adult relationships and to learn. In fact, when students miss significant amounts of instructional time, they tend to lose momentum academically.
We do monitor each child’s attendance daily and will contact a parent if a child does not arrive at school or class as expected. Of course, there are times that students may have health or other concerns that may prevent them from being present. Please call the attendance line at 703-204-8282, for Spanish press 2. You can also report an absence by using this online form or emailing the attendance office at LutherJacksonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu
More information about FCPS’ attendance expectations is available online.
