September 11th - Freedom Flag

flags

The American, Commonwealth of Virginia, and Freedom flag was flown at half mass this past Wednesday, Sept. 11th to remember the many Americans we lost on that day.

September 11, 2019 marked the 18th anniversary of terrorist attacks on American soil, killing 3,000 people in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. To commemorate this historic event, Section 1-510 of the Code of Virginia officially designates the Freedom Flag as the official Flag of Remembrance of September 11, 2001.

A Freedom Flag was ordered for every school in FCPS. Each school was asked to display the Freedom Flag on Wednesday, September 11th.
Designed by a Virginian, the Freedom Flag features ten elements in a red, white, and blue design commemorating all who lived and died on that tragic day.

Universal Screener Testing Information

The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.

The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring.

Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at this webpage.. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinator, Michael Wilson.

Virginia Kindergarten Reading Program

The Virginia state government expects all schools to take part in the Virginia
Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP). The VKRP assesses literacy, mathematics,
self-regulation, and social skills.

Kindergarten students in Fairfax County Public Schools take the iReady universal
screener reading test for VKRP literacy. Teachers interview students using the Early
Mathematics Assessment System (EMAS) for VKRP mathematics. After observing the
student 3-4 weeks, teachers complete the Child Behavior Rating Scale (CBRS) for
VKRP self-regulation and social skills.

All VKRP assessments are given in the fall and spring of kindergarten. Students take
the reading test in the winter, as well. Schools set specific testing dates for each class.
VKRP is designed to help state officials understand school readiness and student
success across Virginia. VKRP results also help teachers, school leaders, and parents
know how to support each child’s learning and development.

If you have questions about VKRP assessments, please contact your child’s teacher or Michael Wilson, the school's test coordinator.
