It was amazing to have your children for our first full week of school. Mr. Birge and I visited nearly all classrooms again to see how much learning and engagement is taking place and we are excited for the year ahead. Yesterday we closed out the week with our summer reading celebration with all our students who completed their summer read boards and we had the largest turnout yet! We have a committee of staff who plan all year for our summer literacy events – read boards, collecting photos of students and staff reading, book mobiles, and library meet-ups. Be sure to thank Ms. Benson, Ms. Burke, Ms. Velazquez, Ms. Renzetti, and Ms. Barnes for their commitment to our students reading year-round!
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to follow our school Twitter (@lemonroadschool) and Facebook accounts (Lemon Road Elementary School). These are great platforms for sharing photos and videos of students participating in learning and celebrating successes. For many educators in FCPS, using social media in a professional capacity allows us to give the Lemon Road parents and community a lens into the amazing learning, collaboration, and creativity that takes place in our buildings. Rest assured that our using social media in a professional capacity will not detract from students’ learning and will not include photos of students that have been opted out. If you have any questions about your child being featured in our Lemon Road affiliated social media posts, please let me know and complete the FCPS opt-out form.
Be sure to check out the upcoming important events below to mark your calendars – we have fun events planned for parents and the whole family in the next month and hope to see everyone! In partnership with you ~ Mrs. Castillo
During the month of September, students in grades K-3 have been learning about a power principle: “Growth mindset”. Growth Mindset is a concept developed by Dr.Carol Dweck, a professor of Psychology at Stanford University. It is the belief that a person’s abilities and intelligence can be developed through practice, hard work, dedication and motivation.
Research has shown that children who have a growth mindset are more likely to learn from their mistakes, take risks, learn faster, be motivated to succeed, seek feedback, take challenges head on, learn more, put forth more effort, and become more resilient individuals.
Please see the picture below and be on the lookout for more information about Growth Mindset and how you can support this work at home with your child.
We look forward to hosting all room parents on Wednesday morning at 8:30 AM in the cafeteria. This will be a time of networking, idea sharing, and understanding ways room parents can support and be involved in the classrooms. It is not required to attend in order to be a room parent. Anyone unable to attend is welcome to email our Room Parent Coordinator: Gurveen Dua at gurveen.dua@gmail.com!

We hope that your child has come home and shared something about the #OtherPeopleMatter Mindset this week! Next week is the very first character strength of the year: curiosity. So, what is curiosity? A curious person likes exploration and discovery — and asks lots of questions because they want to learn more about anything and everything. Our innate urge for discovery and exploration is a key element of our human desire for wisdom and knowledge. It’s what keeps us intrigued in the plot lines of movies and books. It’s what pushes us to try new activities or travel to different places. It's a key to humankind's success. For a 1-page overview of curiosity click here.

Vision and hearing screening will be held on October 16-17th for all Kindergarten, 3rd grade and new to Fairfax County students. If your child wears glasses, please be sure he/she has them at school on screening day. The purpose of screening is to identify students who need further evaluation because they have difficulty seeing the screening chart or hearing the screening tones. Parents will be notified by letter if screening results indicate that further testing is needed. Vision and hearing difficulties can interfere with learning. Prompt follow-up of a referral is recommended.
