Attendance Matters!

“80% of success is showing up.” – Woody Allen

Attendance drives everything! It is tied to almost every aspect of school performance and future outcomes.

Consider these important and interesting facts about attendance:

  • Dropouts make about $1 million less over a lifetime than graduates.
  • When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduation.
  • Attendance improves when schools engage students and parents in positive ways.

Freshman & New Student Parent Night

Parents and guardians of our freshman class and transfers! Please mark your calendars for our Freshman Parent Night. It will be held, Tuesday, September 24th at 6:30pm in the Auditorium.

The Freshman Lead Counselors along with the Academy administrator, AP Coordinator, Parent Liaison, will discuss how we can work collaboratively to support the success of your child at Falls Church High School for the next four years.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Vaping: What Students (and Parents) Should Know

Many students believe that vaping or Juuling is a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes, but that's not true. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that e-cigarettes are not safe for children, teenagers, or young adults. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can impact brain development. Some e-cigarettes contain other harmful chemicals.

What Happens If a Student Is Caught Vaping?

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) was updated in September 2018 to include vaping as a prohibited activity. Students found in possession of or using vape products on school grounds will participate in an FCPS intervention program and may receive disciplinary consequences, as noted in the SR&R. Students may face additional sanctions if they participate in a sport or activity where the Virginia High School League (VHSL) participation agreement is in place.

More information about vaping is available online

Expunging of HS Credit Courses taken in middle school (9th graders only)

In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student's high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. Since parents/guardians must make this request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course, only families of 9th grade students are eligible to make this request. Guidelines and the procedures for expunging grades for high school courses taken in middle school, including the required form, can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/grading-and-reporting/secondary/taking-high-school-courses-in-middle-school.

The deadline for 9th grade requests to expunge a high school credit-bearing course from 8th grade is Friday, November 8, 2019,

Please contact your school counselor for additional information.

2019-20 Changes to Advanced Placement Test Opt-Out Timeline and Fees

FCPS will continue paying the fees for the first six AP tests taken for courses in which students are enrolled for high school credit. Students taking AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding FCPS course are responsible for the test fees.

If students do not wish to take an AP exam, they will have the opportunity to opt-out of the test(s) by filling out an Opt-Out form to be provided by their AP teacher by October 1st. Opt-Out forms are due to Mr. Walker or Ms. Vargas in student services by October 15th.

Parents will be billed in December 2019 for tests that exceed the six FCPS funded tests. Per College Board’s new fee structure, AP students that do not sit for a registered AP test or drop their AP class after October 15th will be assessed a $40 fee.

For more information, visit MyAP, College Board’s digital AP platform.
