Renovation Update

Outside the renovation work continues to work towards completing the work at the Main Stadium in time for our Homecoming game.  The new entry and gate is going up this week, along with other finishing touches at the concession stand and new restroom facilities.  Block work continues with the addition and significant progress has been made. Steel work continues to go up as well. Within a few weeks the two pieces of the addition out front will be connected!  

We continue to notice concerns at drop-off and dismissal with students being let out within the roadways (off campus), along with many illegal u-turns.  We have been communicating with FCPD to help assist in ensuring that everyone is driving safely when arriving and leaving campus. This is a huge safety concern, we want to make sure every student is being dropped off in a safe place.  Please use the designated kiss-and-ride only to ensure students are safe. We continue to remind students to look both ways before crossing a street, and encourage them to remove ear buds and refrain from using their phone while walking.

General Information 

World Languages Credit Exam

The 2019 Credit Exam for World Languages will be administered November 6 – 8, 2019. Students who take the credit exam will now have the opportunity to earn up to three credits, based on demonstrated proficiency.

Thirty (30) languages will be assessed via the FCPS Credit Exam, including:  American Sign Language, Amharic, Arabic, Bengali/Bangla, Chinese/Mandarin, Farsi/Persian, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Nepali, Pashto, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit/Samskritam, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Greek, Hebrew, Portuguese and Turkish languages will be tested using the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT), which is a timed test and has a format distinct from the FCPS World Languages Credit Exam.  More information on the WPT is available here: Writing Proficiency Test.

Registration opens Monday, September 9, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. and closes on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 4:00 p.m.  Late registrations will not be accepted.

Students who are interested should see their school counselor to register.

Attendance Matters

September is Attendance Awareness Month. At Oakton, we believe that addressing chronic absence is a key component of improving graduation rates, increasing academic achievement and giving young people the best chance at success in their adult life. Missing just two days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year. For more information please check out https://www.attendanceworks.org/

AP Exam Registration for Non-Enrolled Students

If any student wants to take an AP exam in a course that he/she is not enrolled in, registration is now open. Each exam costs $94, and the form to register can be found in school counseling or on our website. Students currently enrolled in an AP course are automatically registered for the corresponding AP exam and do not need to complete any form. The deadline to register is October 25th.

College Board Accommodations- Deadline for AP Testing

Students who have an IEP or 504 do not automatically have College Board accommodations. Paperwork must be submitted to Oakton by December 20, 2019, to allow for processing prior to the College Board deadline; however, we encourage students to submit paperwork as early as possible. All paperwork is to be given to Chris Buckley, SSD Coordinator at Oakton High School. Each of the following must be completed:

Student Schedules 

Our staffing decisions and the number of courses offered were based on the classes students selected during the registration period. To maintain the best possible program for our students and one that is most responsive to their educational needs, schedule changes will be limited to space available.  Below is the timeline for schedule changes for this school year.  

Timeline for Schedule Changes: 

  • August 28 - September 16: School counselors will make schedule change requests based on space available
  • September 17 - November 1 (end of 1st quarter): No schedule changes
  • After November 6: Any student requesting a schedule change will need to fill out the schedule change request form, signed by parent, student, teacher, school counselor and administrator. If approved by the administration, schedule changes will only be processed if there is space available.
  • There will not be any schedule changes, regardless of space available, after the end of the 3rd quarter.

Parent Information

Host Families Needed 

The French department is seeking host families for students who will be visiting from Vesoul, France in October. The students will arrive on October 15 and will depart on October 24th. They will spend 3 days at school shadowing their host student and will also spend time touring the area with their classmates and teachers (host families are not expected to attend these excursions).

If you are interested in hosting, please email Emily Fugate-Brunino (ekfugatebrun@fcps.edu) as soon as possible and please indicate if you prefer a male or female student. We’d like to have families signed up as soon as possible so that students can begin communicating and getting to know one another.

PTSA Information 

Join us for our first PTSA Meeting on September 24, 7p.m. in the Oakton Library.  Meet the PTSA team, Principal Lane and other Oakton HS families. We will approve the PTSA budget, audit and learn about the upcoming events for this year!  Everyone is welcome and you don't have to be a PTSA member to join us.  Please RSVP so we know how many to expect!

Committee Chairs - We have openings for the following Chairs and Committee Members: Membership, Fundraising, Beautification/Landscaping, Social Events, Community Outreach, PTA Programs and Mini Grants.  Training is provided, please consider signing up with a friend to share the role. Volunteers Needed - Please sign up to volunteer for the 10th Grade Vision/Hearing Screening on Wednesday, October 9 and Wednesday, October 23.  NOTE: You must have an Oakton HS PTBoard account to sign up to volunteer.  Email us if you have any questions!

Partners for Safe Teen Driving

All students enrolled in Classroom Driver Education during the 2019-2020 school year must attend a 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety presentation (PSTD). The 90-minute presentation is connected to successful classroom instruction and must be completed to receive a DEC-District 8 card. The 90-minute parent-teen traffic safety presentation (PSTD) will be offered four times during the school year at Oakton. Students and their parent/guardian should plan to attend the presentation at Oakton during the quarter their student receives driver education. 

PSTD meetings at Oakton during 2019/2020 school year:

  • Tues. September 24th
  • Wed. December 4th
  • Mon. February 24th
  • Mon. April 20th

All sessions will run from 7:00-8:30pm in the Oakton Auditorium.

Please bring a pen/pencil and arrive on time. Late arrivals will not be admitted once the presentation begins.

The meeting is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors that have not attended a PSTD night yet. The student and parent must attend one presentation as a part of the VA licensing requirements. 

Juniors and seniors who wish to attend, must pre-register online through the Adult and Community Education (ACE) office and pay a $30 fee - please see a Drivers Ed teacher for more details.

Sophomores DO NOT need to pre-register. This is not available to freshmen

The Pantry at Oakton High School

Did you know that Oakton High School has a pantry where students in need can pick up non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, household cleaning supplies, and paper goods? If you are in need, please contact anyone in the guidance office and they can offer you assistance.

The Pantry at OHS is supported by our wonderful Oakton community. Donations are always welcome and can be dropped off in the front office, at door 4.
