Fairfax Villa ES Tuesday Message

ffff

It's wonderful to be greeted by Ms. Rubin each morning!

It's Your Chance To Vote!

At our PTA meeting last week, we discussed the possible scheduling options for our 2020-2021 Open House/Back to School events.  It is essential that we gather input from our entire community to decide for next year that will benefit the majority.

Please read the two options below and then click https://forms.gle/dSdRgqUwEc9DHAUL8 to vote once for the option that would work best for you and your family.  At an upcoming PTA meeting, we will review our results and then publish our findings in a News You Choose message. Here are the two choices:

Choice 1: Separate Open House (Daytime) and Back to School Night (Evening)

This option would have the Open House held for all students the Thursday before school starts from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm as an opportunity for students and families to meet their new teacher. The Back to School event would then be held on two separate evenings beginning at 5:00 pm within the first three weeks of school.

Due to our limited parking, we would need to hold this event on two consecutive nights for different grade levels.

Choice 2: Combined Open House and Back to School (Daytime)

This option gives us a combined Open House and Back to School event on the same day from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. After meeting their teachers and new classmates for the Open House, students would then go with their new classmates to another room while their parents/guardians attend the Back to School information session in the classroom with the teacher. This is the model we have used for the past two years.

You may vote until 4:00 pm on September 20, 2019. We appreciate you voting just one time for your family.

Advanced Academic News

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  We are looking forward to a great year of learning!  Mrs. Wilkins, Fairfax Villa's Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, will hold a parent information session on September 23, at 9:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.  At that meeting, she will share an overview of the four levels of service in FCPS and share general information about the screening process/timeline for this year.  On December 4, she will hold another information meeting specifically on the level IV (full-time) referral/screening process. For more information about the Advanced Academics in FCPS, click here.

Here are some important dates to note for the year:

September 23, 2019:  Parent Information Meeting – AAP Overview – 9:30 am in the school cafeteria

October 10, 2019:  AAP Level IV referral forms due to Mrs. Wilkins (only for students new to FCPS as of January 1, 2019)

December 4, 2019:  Parent Information meeting – referral/screening process information, 9:30 am in the school cafeteria

January 9, 2020:  AAP Level IV referral forms and optional materials due to Mrs. Wilkins at Fairfax Villa

If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Wilkins, Advanced Academics Resource Teacher, at cmwilkins@fcps.edu.

Ability Testing

In the fall, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) is administered to all FCPS first grade students and the CogAT- Custom Form is administered to all FCPS second grade students. During the fall testing cycle, the NNAT and/or Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) may be administered to students in Grades 3-6 who do not have an ability test score.

Parents or guardians may exercise a one-time retest option during the fall testing cycle. Please contact the school testing coordinator, KJ An, at kan@fcps.edu with your child’s name, grade, and teacher, no later than September 25, 2019, to request a one-time retest for either the NNAT or CogAT.

Please do not wait for test scores before submitting a referral for your student in Grades 2-7 as there will be no referrals for Level IV screening accepted past the January 9 deadline. If you are waiting for test scores and would like your student screened for Level IV, please submit the referral by the published deadline (even if you have not received the test scores for your student).
