Dear Families,
Our second week of school was fantastic! The students settled into routines and really seemed engaged in all the experiences that their teachers were providing. It was fun to visit a number of classrooms! I observed sixth grade students reflecting on the meaning of their name. Kindergarten students hunted all through the school in search of the letters of the alphabet! Second graders collaborated and used important communication skills to create a poster. Throughout all the learning, the children are continuing to build relationships and make new friends! The school is truly buzzing with enthusiastic energy!
We started our beginning of the school year safety drills. Teachers and students worked hard to ensure that our first two fire drills were a success! We will continue to practice fire and other safety drills this first month of school. While we practice here at school, you may wish to talk to your child at home about all the ways that they can be safe at school and at home. Safety is a priority!
It was wonderful to meet so many parents at Back to School Night. We hope you found the experience helpful as you got to know our teachers and what to expect as the school year unfolds.
Finally, we welcomed Mrs. Good, our Interim Assistant Principal. Mrs. Good and I worked together as an administrative team in the past and we are delighted to be together again at Freedom Hill!
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!

The Code of Virginia (Section 22.1-137), the Virginia Administrative Code Section 8VAC20-131-260, and the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code Section 405.2 require that every public school shall conduct a fire drill once a week for the first 20 school days of the school session, and then once a month for the rest of the school year.
Additionally, schools are required to conduct four lock down drills during the year and a tornado drill. Freedom Hill successfully conducted its first two fire drills and will conduct its first lock down drill the week of September 16th. For more details on various safety drill requirements, please see FCPS Regulation 8633.9.

Kiss & Ride is offered before and after school for families at Freedom Hill who would like to personally transport their children. We ask that you carefully read the Kiss and Ride procedures below:
ONLY drop off and pick up your child at Kiss and Ride from the designated area. It is not safe when parents/students cross through the parking lot in the middle of arrival. The Kiss and Ride line moves quickly and we want everyone to be safe.
Children must unload and load from the passenger side of the car ONLY.
Drivers must remain in the car. School staff will assist students getting in and out.
Cars must stay in a single file line as they move through Kiss and Ride. Please, no passing other cars while in line and no premature drop-offs.
Kiss and Ride is available from 9:05 until 9:18 a.m. After 9:20, parents must park and escort your child(ren) to the main office.Students are marked late if they are not in their classroom at 9:20 am.*An exception to this is if children arrive on a bus that is delayed. Bus riders are not marked late. In the afternoon we begin at 4:05 pm
There are two easy ways you can help to celebrate our amazing teachers at staff at Freedom Hill Elementary.
First, do you know a Freedom Hill teacher or staff member who has gone above and beyond? Please consider submitting a short recognition statement to FCPS Cares! This is an easy and very nice way of celebrating the efforts of our Freedom Hill employees that can sometimes go unrecognized. Give it a try! Just click this FCPS Cares link and fill in the blanks. It just takes a minute and will mean so much to those individuals!
Second, in an effort to help keep ongoing recognition as part of our school, families are invited to send a gift card of any amount to the attention of school administration (Mrs. Morgan and/or Mrs. Good). The gift card can be for anything, anywhere, and for any amount. Each month throughout the year, we use the cards to recognize our staff for outstanding work in the school.
Thanks in advance for helping us recognize the work of Freedom Hill teachers and staff!
Be sure to sign up for our PTA's weekly newsletter . This will help you stay in the loop on all the things that your PTA is doing. In the meantime, here are a few key things to know:
Fairfax County Public Schools wants all parents to understand its policies regarding surveys, records, curriculum, privacy, and related rights.
In its Annual Notice of Survey, Records, Curriculum, Privacy, and Related Rights and Opt-Out Forms (Annual Notice), FCPS provides explanations of the rights listed above as well as forms that may be used to exercise opt-out choices. Two versions of the Annual Notice are available—a grades K-8 version and a grades 9-12 version. Parents with children at different grade levels should read each applicable version of the Annual Notice because the notices and opt-out rights vary depending on the student’s grade level.
Get more information and view the 2019-20 Opt-Out Booklets.
