Dear Family Fairfax,

Today marked our first Fairfax Fun Friday!  Students can use the Student Den on these days to see what is available for sign up, or they can just choose to study if they would like.  Last year, our student leaders asked for a time like today to be built into Lion Time, and we made it happen.   I hope that it evolves to become something our students look forward to!

Also, today, I hosted my first parent coffee of the school year.  The parent coffees are fairly informal and provide an opportunity for parents to get to know each other and me, discuss timely and relevant challenges, generate ideas, and gather information.  They start promptly at 7:30AM and end by 8:30AM.  There typically isn’t a pre-established agenda, like with PTSA, though I might plan for certain staff members to attend when questions arise.  The coffees are on the first Friday of the month unless schools are delayed or closed.  Today, we talked about our lunches, ideas for a Parent Information Den, and ideas for more parent involvement. I recommended that we work with our PTSA on opportunities, but I am all ears and all about opening our doors to our community, if we have parents who want to take the lead on this.

There is a buzz in the air today because we have our home-opener football game tonight, and at least as of now, it looks like Dorian’s remnants might keep us cloudy but dry!  The home opener also includes our annual Flavor of Fairfax, where we showcase our numerous clubs and activities.  I had planned to be in a dunk tank at 4:30, but I am told that we had to cancel it because we were anticipating rain..  Darn.  I am really disappointed.  😊

Last week’s game was a nail biter, and I was so proud of the  large number of students who came out and our hard-fighting football team!  It is always fun to be on the sidelines with our kids, although I sometimes want to run out on the field and get into the huddle.  I am told that I need to refrain from doing that, though.  Our hallways are decorated…so let the fun begin!

Wishing you all a safe and relaxing weekend,

Erin
