Principal's Letter

Dear Waynewood Owls,

It was so great to see so many parents and guardians at Back to School Night! We hope you enjoyed getting to know the teacher a little better and learning about the upcoming year.

I am proud to let you know that the FCPS School Board will be honoring Waynewood Elementary for two reasons at their September 12 meeting. Last year we earned a Virginia Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award, based on the Virginia Index of Performance. We are also being honored with a resolution in honor of our 60th Anniversary. You are welcome to join us on September 12 at 7:30 pm in the Luther Jackson Middle School auditorium to receive these awards. It should be a great night!

Next week is Safety Week. This means we will practice all of our Safety Drills so that we can be prepared in the event of an emergency. Practicing helps us all to become familiar with routines and safety procedures. We have already been practicing our fire drills, but next week we will also practice our tornado drill, earthquake drill (you can never be too safe, right?), and lockdown drill.

The schedule for the week is:

  • Monday- Fire Drill (weather permitting)
  • Tuesday-Tornado Drill
  • Wednesday-no drills
  • Thursday-Earthquake Drill
  • Friday-Lockdown Drill

Our PTA fundraiser is already underway and we have reached over 50% of our goal! This money goes directly to the PTA and supports the school in many ways. Some of the ways these funds will be used include purchasing computer software, our new library mural, and supporting teacher professional development. We are so appreciative of all the support that the PTA offers the school.   If you would like to support our Jog-A-Thon, you can donate here: https://www.wizathon.com/waynewood-jogathon/

We also encourage you to join the PTA this year. Joining the PTA is a wonderful way to connect with other families and get involved with all the great events at Waynewood. The PTA usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month. We were so excited to see over 60 people at our first PTA meeting.   It only takes a minute to join! You can join here: https://waynewoodelem.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=10

Please continue reading for important updates. We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Walkers

We are continuing to monitor student safety and door access. It would really help the flow of foot traffic and increase safety for everyone if students and parents crossed Waynewood Blvd at the crosswalk with the crossing guard (in both the morning and afternoon) in order to access Door 1. We appreciate your help with this. We will update you next week if a change is made.

A Note from Mrs. McGuire

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to a new school year! My name is Margaret McGuire, and I am the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher (AART) at Waynewood.

I am very excited to be working with Waynewood students in kindergarten through grade six again this year!

My role as AART is to support the implementation of the continuum of Advanced Academic Services. Please refer to the FCPS website which details Level I through Level IV services for elementary school students. There is also a video about our continuum of services on the FCPS Advanced Academic Programs website at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/advanced-academics.

This year I will be welcoming all students to the Strategies Lab, working with teachers to plan meaningful learning experiences, and meeting with small groups of students. Screening for Advanced Academic services is also an important part of my role at Waynewood. Look for more information in the Wednesday Folder and on my Blackboard 24/7 site regarding screening deadlines and instructions. If you would like to learn more about the Advanced Academic Programs at Waynewood, please join me at the Parent Information Night on Wednesday, October 2, at 6:00p.m.in the Waynewood cafeteria.

I look forward to working with you and your child(ren) this year!

Sincerely,

Margaret McGuire
