The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Board adopted a universal screener assessment for use with all elementary school students in kindergarten through grade 6. The universal screener assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test. Students in kindergarten will receive screening for reading only. Students in grades 1-6 will receive screening for both mathematics and reading.
The purpose of this assessment is to identify students who may have gaps in foundational literacy and mathematics skills. Based on universal screener results, some students may require an additional assessment to further diagnose the specific learning areas that may need support. The universal screener reading test, together with any necessary follow-up diagnostic assessments, also fulfills state testing expectations for primary students.
The universal screener and any necessary follow-up assessments will be given at the beginning of the school year. Depending on grade level and previous screener performance, students may receive screening again in the winter and/or in the spring. Schools set the specific dates for testing in each class. For the expected dates when your child will test, please contact your child’s teacher.
Additional information, including a short video, about the universal screener in FCPS can be found at this webpage: https://www.fcps.edu/node/33718. If you have further questions about this assessment, please contact your child’s teacher or the school’s test coordinator.
Teachers in grades 1-6 at Lees Corner may begin administering the universal screener (iReady) the week of September 9th and testing may continue through the first week in October. Kindergarten testing will take place in October and early November.
Students are required to use headphones for the reading test. If you haven't yet sent in headphones or earbuds for your child, please try to send them in on Monday so students will be ready for testing.
Our PTA is excited to launch our fall after school class registration next week! Your child brought home a schedule in their Wednesday folder and more information can be found at http://leescornerpta.net/. We hope everyone gets a chance to try out an after school enrichment class. Is your child an aspiring architect, chef or computer whiz? Is he or she interested in gaining new skills or getting energy out with friends in a fun, relaxed setting? We have a variety of class offerings this semester, something for all ages and abilities. Classes begin the first week of October so make your plans now! Please contact Claire Evangelista at LCESafterschoolenrichment@gmail.com with any questions.
LCES is forming Odyssey of the Mind teams for the 2019-2020 season. We're looking for interested students of all ages. Teams are made up of 5-7 students and require at least one coach. LCES students would fall into one of three divisions. Primary - kindergarten through second; Division I - third through fifth; and Division II sixth through eighth.
If your student is interested and/or you are interested in coaching, please contact Robin Cole at robinmcole@gmail.com. Please know that we can only organize as many teams as we have coaches, so if your child is interested, please consider volunteering to coach. No experience is necessary and there is training available to all coaches.
An Odyssey of the Mind informational meeting is scheduled on Wednesday, September 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the library.
For more information, please see https://www.odysseyofthemind.com/.
