September Newsletter from Principal Tam and PTA

Dear Westbriar Parents:

We had a wonderful two weeks of school!  Teachers and students have gotten to know one another and established important routines.  Thank you for your support.  If you are new to our school community, welcome!  Each month, I send out a parent newsletter in collaboration with our PTA so you would get monthly news and updates - all in one place.  If you know someone new this year, ask them to sign up for News You Choose and select Westbriar to receive our monthly newsletters.

It was wonderful to see and meet so many parents who attended our first PTA meeting of the school year yesterday morning.  We hold PTA meetings in the mornings and evenings on a rotating basis.  You are an important part of your child's education, I hope to see many of you at our PTA meetings this school year.

Here are some important safety reminders:

  • We have staff in yellow vests with stop signs at arrival and dismissal.  Please watch out for them and obey the stop signs when they are raised to allow for students and parents to safely cross busy streets.  We had a few mishaps where thankfully no one was hurt, but cars were speeding down the road and not paying attention to staff members in yellow vests who were holding up stop signs.  We need your help to ensure our community is safe at arrival and dismissal.
  • Kiss and Ride:  1) please have your child load and unload from the passenger side of the car.  You should not get out of your car, our staff members will open the door and help your child into your car.  We do our best to get you on your way so please stay inside your car during Kiss and Ride.  2) Please have your Kiss and Ride Tag displayed so we can see your number.  3) If you need more time to help your child get settled, please pull forward to the side of the school (near SACC entrance) so other cars can move forward in the Kiss and Ride lane.

Thank you for your partnership, we are truly an collaborative community.  I hope to see you at our Back to School Fun Night this evening.

Field Day Information

The physical education department is getting ready for our Westbriar Field Day on September 27 (rain date is Oct. 4).  We would love to have parent volunteers help make this a great day for all of our students.  Volunteers are needed to help run a station/game.  We like to have two parent volunteers per station to help as the classes come by to play.  Volunteers would stay at the same station until all the classes have come through.  The teachers will travel with their classes to help manage the students.  Grades K-3 have their field day from 9:45-11:50 and grades 4-6 have theirs from about 1-3:15.   You would only need to volunteer for either morning or afternoon.  The sign up genius link is listed below for the different sessions, please click on the link and sign up for a station. We can’t do field day without our wonderful volunteers!  If you have any questions please email Mrs. Shoop  Debbie.shoop@fcps.edu  or Mr. Pulliam  kcpulliam@fcps.edu .

Your PTA Thanks YOU

There has been so much work behind the scenes to get this PTA year started, we want to express our sincere appreciation to the following volunteers:

  • Jennifer Sellers, who served as our PTA President for the last two years, but continues to be completely involved by chairing the Field Day shirt program, the Spirit Wear program, Dining for Dollars, Cultural Arts Assemblies, Staff Hospitality, and Back to School Fun Night. (And that's just this fall!)
  • Aja Chaker, our rising kindergartener liaison, who arranged playdates for incoming kindergarten students (and parents) over the summer.  Aja also manages the Westbriar marquee sign on the curb at the school.
  • Suneeta Rana, our VP of Membership, who has worked tirelessly to make our PTA easy to join and fun to be a part of.  This is Suneeta's 14th and last year as a Westbriar parent, and her 6th year as a PTA chair or board member.
  • Katy Lee, Heather Gatewood, and Amy Blas, who slogged through auditing our PTA books for 2018-19.
  • Deirdre Naughton, our continuing PTA Treasurer, who wrapped up the 2018-19 year balanced to the PENNY, and who drafted this year's budget (and who, once our new budget is passed, will write every check all year long.)
  • Angie Gutenson, who manages all PTA social media and sends out fun and informative posts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Jenni Bae and Dara Dirth, who arranged for and delivered school supply kits for over 300 students this year, saving lots of time and headaches for over 300 happy parents.
  • Julianna Lieu, who put together refreshments for our PTA Meet and Greet on Monday, 8/26, for lots of new and continuing parents to enjoy.  Julianna also continues as our PTA Secretary, and she'll be taking our minutes at every board meeting and membership meeting, all year long.
  • Siritha Bathula, our new PTA Webmaster, who has already applied her magic to our homepage -- check us out at www.westbriarpta.org !
  • Katie Chernyak, our continuing VP of Enrichment, who put together a dazzling array of 24 diverse enrichment classes for our students to enjoy before and after school this fall.
