Principal’s Welcome

The 2019-2020 school year has begun and we are off to a phenomenal start! This year we will continue to work towards our vision of NEST: Nurture! Educate! Soar! Thrive! We will continue to work hard to prepare our students for their future education, careers, and life experiences by:

Nurturing all students by creating a supportive and safe learning environment.

Collaborating to educate students to be innovative problem solvers.

Encouraging students to soar by teaching them to be resilient and goal-directed individuals.

Helping students thrive as they act responsibly and ethically within their global community.

Hayfield ES currently has 777 students!  We are thrilled to continue our work with our dedicated PTA as we work together to create family-fun events throughout the school year. Our PTA does so much to support our students’ school experience and we are so appreciative! We also want to say a sincere THANK YOU to our PTA for sponsoring our Back to School Breakfast for staff and our Fifth Annual Boo Hoo Breakfast held for parents on the first day of school. The partnership between school and the PTA is vital to our continued success.

We know the beginning of school is an extremely busy time. We ask that you take some time to review all of the documents that come home and be sure to visit our website often for updated information. As the school year progresses, we will continue to provide our families with relevant information through this newsletter, News You Choose messages, and by way of our website.

Thank you, again, to our students, parents, and staff for a smooth school opening. We look forward to the relationships that we will continue to build and to the many community-building activities that we will enjoy together this school year!

Directory Opt-Out Forms Due by September 23

If you do not wish for your child’s information to be published via the school directory, yearbook, website, etc., we must receive your opt out no later than September 23. The Directory Opt-Out Form is located here: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/opt-out-forms

We ask that you review all options on the form carefully to avoid opting your child out of something you intended for them to participate in. Once these publications are printed, changes cannot be made. If you are not opting your child out of anything, no action is required.

A complete list of opt-out forms and a booklet containing all forms in several languages can be found at: https://www.fcps.edu/registration/opt-out-forms

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education. Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.

Student Handbook

Each student received an agenda on the first day of school. Please check your child’s agenda daily and refer to the Student Handbook in the front of the agenda for information on:

  • Absences, Early Checkouts, Tardiness
  • Birthdays
  • Forgotten Items
  • Health Room
  • Lunch
  • Office Hours

School Drop-off Times

To ensure the safety of our students, we ask that students arrive no earlier than 8:20 am each day. Kiss-N-Ride drop off is from 8:20-8:35 am each morning, and begins at 3:20 pm each afternoon. The school does not provide before or after school student supervision. As a safety measure, we ask that all Kiss–N-Ride students be dropped off in the designated area only and never on the side of the building.

K-6 Curriculum

Interested in learning more about the curriculum your child will be learning this year? K-6 Year at a Glance documents are now available. Each document provides a high-level understanding of what topics will be taught in the core subjects of Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

Transportation News: Here Comes the Bus Mobile App and Bus-Delay Notification System

Wondering when your child’s bus is approaching your stop? Check out the new app Here Comes the Bus®! This free bus-tracking app can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving real-time bus location and text or e-mail notification alerts, helping everybody get to the bus stop on time.

Here Comes the Bus® uses FCPS global positioning system (GPS) data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet, smartphone, or desktop computer. Parents can download the app now for free from the App Store or Google Play. You will need the FCPS school district code 28982 and a Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account (contact your child's school if you do not have an SIS Parent Account). Once signed in, you can customize or edit features, including how the app will communicate with you and the size and location of the notification radius around your child's bus stop. You can learn more about Here Comes the Bus® online.

You can also stay up-to-date on school bus arrivals with FCPS' bus-delay notification system. This system provides parents with timely notification of late bus route information. You can access it directly online. Morning bus route information will be available until noon. The afternoon bus route information will be available from 1 to 7 p.m. E-Notify email messages will also be sent to announce bus delays.

Need assistance or have questions? Visit the FCPS Transportation page for more information.

Temporary Transportation Change-

What is Needed

Parents/guardians MUST complete and send the Zippy Transportation Pass when children are visiting another classmate’s home immediately after school. This pass is needed from both sets of parents or legal guardians to verify the requested change. Arrangements are to be made at home that indicate the details of the arrangement to include transportation methods. If a visit requires a student to get off the bus at a different stop or to ride a different bus, permission will be given through the office. Bus drivers will not take children on the bus without permission from the school. A child will be sent home using his or her usual manner of transportation unless this pass is sent to school from the parent or guardian. Parents are highly encouraged to schedule play-date and sleepover exchanges of children outside of school hours. Please be mindful that during the busy school day, we do not have the human resources to support verifying the volume of requests that are made on a day to day basis.

SCA Spirit Day

Hayfield Elementary has a very active SCA (Student Council Association). Throughout the year the SCA sponsors monthly spirit days for ALL HES students.  Each month our SCA choses a theme for the spirit day. The first spirit day is scheduled for Friday, September 27 and is "show your Hayfield spirit" by wearing a Hayfield T-shirt, sweatshirt, or something that is orange and white (our school colors).  We encourage ALL OUR STUDENTS to show their enthusiasm and spirit by participating in this spirit day.
