As you can see we are crazy about your children!

Family,

Well Week 1 is in the books! Let me start the conversation off with your students have been absolutely phenomenal! We have put them through some changes this week (new students being totally lost, changes in bell schedules, new lessons, crisis management drills, laptop distribution, etc.) and they have not even flinched! If something wasn’t right with a schedule, they were able to find an adult to work through problem. When we had to change suddenly due to an unforeseen circumstance, they went with the flow. Our students have just been outstanding to work with this week.

Teachers opened the week with community building activities and getting to know their students. Some students were learning about new teachers, and others were getting reacquainted with a teacher they have had in the past. I was able to get into classes to hear a positive tone being set. And trust me, this isn’t an easy sell after students have spent over a month getting up at 10:30 in the morning. But it was like the students actually liked their teachers! I know, it’s crazy right?!

It was great to see the students interacting with one another too. We had an awesome pep rally, where the students supported one another in a #OneStallion way. Students shared their summer experiences with one another, and helped each other find their way around the building. It has just been a fantastic week.

I always wonder how the opening of school will go because somewhere in the county, that nightmare week has happened. Well, this one may have been the best one yet, and I need to thank some awesome folks for all they do.

I would like to give a huge shout out to our custodial staff and our support staff. Our custodial staff has maintained a beautiful building this entire summer, even though we have been packed with people all summer. And our front office and support staff have been the bright smiling faces that our students and parents have seen and gotten their vibes from every day, as the faces of the building. I would also like to thank the security staff for keeping us safe, and being those extra pairs of hands when we needed a few. And last, but not least, our cafeteria staff who always provide our students with a warm smile and a kind word. If you happen to come up to the building and see any of these people, please know that they have as much of an impact on our success with your students as anyone else in this building. Tell them how much you appreciate their hard work. They deserve all the praise we can give them.

I know many of you have heard me say this a number of times last year, but I truly mean it every time I tell you. Thank you for allowing me to do this job I love. It is what keeps me moving in a positive direction daily. Continue to be the supportive parents and friends of South County you have been, and get ready for another awesome year of working together.  Have a great weekend Family. #OneStallion

FCPSOn SCHS Laptop Distribution Update:

Our first week of school has been an exciting one, we have now distributed over 2000 laptops which is the majority of our student population, we have a little over 200 to go. Below you will find some helpful guidelines regarding appropriate device and internet use.

Important Reminders:

  1. Students should charge their laptops every evening so that they arrive to school with a fully charged laptop
  2. Students are expected to bring their laptops every day. Loaner laptops are not available.
  3. Any technical issues should be reported to one of the student’s teachers so the student can be referred to the Tech Support Office.

When you talk with your children about their first week of school, this would be a great time to discuss expectations and guidelines about their technology use at school and at home. Now that your child has received a laptop, both parents and students are required to review The Student Device Responsible Use Guidelines provided by FCPS. Improper use of the device and/or technology may result in disciplinary actions as determined by the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) document. Parents and students are required to read and accept the Acceptable Use Policy for Student Network Access within the SR&R document.  For support at home, parents/caregivers might consider a Customizable Device Contract and Family Media Agreement that will support them as they talk with their children about internet use and set rules that are right for their family. Common Sense Media is a reputable resource for parents. The Virginia Department of Education has developed guidelines and resources for internet safety too. Parents can find additional support about device/internet use by completing the Digital Citizenship for Families with Teens Online Course , a four module online course developed by FCPS for parents/guardians and their teen in grades 7 and up.
