Safety Drill Message for Parents & Guardians

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The first month of school is full of learning and establishing community and routines. In addition, we are required to instruct students on emergency preparedness drills throughout the school year.

Every school in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly. Now, we, along with other Fairfax County schools, have formally added an additional drill, called a lockdown drill.

These drills are short and precise so that our students and staff are familiar with the procedures in the event of an emergency. Below you will find a list of the safety routines that we practice throughout the year.

Type of Drill:  Required Frequency

Fire Safety Drills:

Once a week during the first 20 days

Once a month from October-June

Lockdown Drill:

Two drills during the first 20 days

Two additional for the remainder of the year

Tornado Drill

Once a year in March

Bus Emergency Drill

Two per year.
