8th Grade Back to School Night

Wednesday, September 4, 2019

Dear Rachel Carson Families:

We are looking forward to welcoming parents and guardians of RCMS eighth grade students at Back To School Night on Wednesday, September 4, from 7:00PM to 8:30PM Parents should report to their child’s first period class where they will view a short welcome on the TV from our administration. Parents and guardians will then have an opportunity to follow their student’s schedule, meet teachers and counselors, and learn more about the upcoming school year.

Food Trucks:  We are excited to have three food trucks on site during our 8th Grade Back to School Night.  Blue City, Divine Swine, and Mr. Wrap food trucks will all be present, selling a variety of foods for purchase.  If you are interested in one of these choices as a dining option, feel free to arrive after 5:30 PM.  You can eat at our outdoor tables or in our cafeteria where video greetings from Dr. Brabrand and School Board members will be playing.  We look forward to seeing you on this evening.

FLE Preview 6:15PM in the Library: There will be a preview/information session starting at 6:15PM for our Family Life Education units.  Physical Education teachers will be on hand in the library to discuss the instructional units, how you may opt out of any portions of the program, and answer any questions you may have.

Back to School Night Flyer: Students will be sent home with a flyer for Back to School Night during their Panther Time class. Remind them to give you this flyer as it will have a copy of their schedule printed for your convenience.  If your student forgets to give you the flyer you can always pick up a copy of your student’s schedule in the main foyer that evening.  You may also access your child’s schedule via SIS ParentVue and SIS StudentVue. For more information about obtaining a ParentVue account, please click here to access support on the FCPS website. Please note that an “activation key” is required to activate a ParentVue account.

Parking Shuttle: Parking is available at Carson, Nysmith or at Open Door Presbyterian Church, 3001 Centreville Road Herndon, VA. Please do not park in the fields at Carson, as this will damage our underground irrigation systems.  RCMS will have an FCPS shuttle bus running on Back to School Night. It will begin runs at 6:30PM from our overflow parking location at Open Door Presbyterian Church. The shuttle will run until 7:15PM and then begin again at 8:30PM until approximately 30 minutes after BTSN has ended to assist parents in getting to their cars.

Greetings from Dr. Brabrand and School Board members:  If you are interested in viewing Back To School messages from Superintendent Dr. Brabrand and members of the School Board, their video greetings will be shown in the cafeteria throughout Back to School Night, starting at 6:00PM. You can also view this message by clicking on the links below.

Carson One Book

This fall, all Carson teachers, staff, and students will read Refugee  by Alan Gratz together during our Drop Everything And Read time (Wednesdays during Panther Time).

We ask students to bring a copy of the book to school by September 4, 2019.

Refugee by Alan Gratz may be found at any of the following locations:

Digital Permission Letter

At RCMS we are fortunate to have laptops in every classroom this year.  Teachers are looking forward to incorporating engaging and meaningful technology into their instruction and have a variety of tools they would like to use.  Some of these tools require users under age 13 to give permission.  A Digital Permission Letter was handed out to all 7th graders through their History class last week and to eighth graders who are under 13 through their Civics class.  There was one tool not listed on the form, Smart Music, that should have been included.  If you haven’t returned this form signed yet, please send it with your child ASAP.

Every Day Counts! Absences Add Up

FCPS is looking forward to a great school year! Regular attendance is essential for students to form positive peer and adult relationships and to learn. In fact, when students miss significant amounts of instructional time, they tend to lose momentum academically.

We do monitor each child’s attendance daily and will contact a parent if a child does not arrive at school or class as expected. Of course, there are times that students may have health or other concerns that may prevent them from being present. Please contact the RCMS Attendance line at CarsonMiddle.Attendance@fcps.edu or 703-925-3636.

More information about FCPS’ attendance expectations is available online.

Ensure On-Time Arrival to School

We are pleased to see so many of our students opting to arrive at school via FCPS school bus.  Continued use of the FCPS-provided transportation ensures that your student arrives on time to school, with no unexcused tardies recorded.  Arriving in class at the beginning of instruction allows your student to receive important information from their teacher as the learning day begins.  As the year progresses, we encourage all families to reserve Kiss and Ride travel for those days when you must deliver oversized instruments or special projects with your student.

Join the RCMS PTA!

The RCMS PTA supports the school with funding for technology purchases, student and family spirit events, student enrichment programs, staff development, staff appreciation events, and much more!  Go to www.rcmspta.org (school code: 3MA6NU) to join the RCMS PTA and we hope to see you at an upcoming meeting on Thursday, September 26!

You can also stop by our PTA table at the Back-To-School Nights to join in person (cash or checks accepted) and to learn more about the RCMS PTA.
