Back To School Nights Presentations (All Grades)
It was great seeing so many of you at our recent Back To School Night events. Thank you for taking time to help us celebrate our collective accomplishments as a school and partner with us to ensure the continued success of your child. We are so proud of our students and staff for what our they has been able to accomplish with our CRES2020 vision, and we look forward to sharing more details at our upcoming PTO meetings.
Below are .pdf links to the General Membership meeting and New Parent Orientation meeting presentations.
'Reading Connections' and 'Home&School Connections' monthly newsletters (All Grades)
Thank you to our families who participated in the FCPS Parent Engagement Survey last spring. Colvin Run is excelling with many areas in the 80-90% Strongly Agree/Agree and we appreciate your partnership ensuring CRES is a welcoming school for students, teachers, and parents. An area of growth is ensuring parents "receive enough information from this school about what I can do at home to help my child improve his or her learning". As we explore and gather information from parents, we are excited about a new publication that will be mailed to your house in the next few days and then come home in the first Wednesday folder of the month for October-May. The 'Reading Connections' newsletter and 'Home&School Connections' newsletter give parents easy tips and activities to support their child in school with Reading, Writing, and Language development and helpful ways to support their child's growth as lifelong learners. We hope you enjoy these monthly publications.
Parent Book Discussion Group (All Grades)
Beginning September 23, Ms. Allen and Mrs. Grabel will host a parent book talk. We will meet weekly on Mondays from 9:00-9:35 a.m. to discuss the book, The Self-Driven Child by William Stixrud and Ned Johnson. If you are interested in attending please email Ms. Allen or Mrs. Grabel. Feel free to join at anytime.
Forgotten Lunch and Instrument Drop-off Location (All Grades)
To make it easier for parents to drop off forgotten lunches and instruments, please use the location in the front lobby. If your child forgot their lunch or instrument, please:
- drop off the lunch/instrument,
- write their name on a piece of paper
- put that paper in the plastic sleeve.
Your child will be able to easily identify the forgotten item.
Morning Arrival Reminder (All Grades)
The school hours are 9:20 AM - 4:05 PM Monday through Friday. In the interest of safety, it is very important that you do not drop your child off before 8:55 AM. There is no supervision for students before this time and any students are brought to the Main Office until supervision is available in the cafeteria.
Safety is a top priority, and a reminder letter will be sent home with students who are dropped off before this time. Starting at 8:55, students wait in the cafeteria until 9:05 AM at which time they will be released to the classrooms.
School Safety Drills (All Grades)
Virginia requires all schools to conduct three lockdown drills each school year, two in September and one in January. Last week, our students and staff took part in the first “Lockdown Drill” for September. Before the drill, students and staff were reminded that it is only a practice drill, and staff remind students regarding what to do during the drill.
A Lockdown Drill requires that all students and staff remain in classrooms or other designated secure locations that are away from danger and that minimize access and visibility. Similar procedures would be followed in a real situation. A real “lockdown” procedure is initiated in the rare event a high risk incident occurs in the school, on school property or in the vicinity of the school that could endanger the safety of the students and staff. The safety of our students and staff at Colvin Run Elementary School is a top priority, and the drills help ensure that we are able to successfully manage crisis situations at the school.
Virginia requires all schools to perform one fire drill per week for the first 20 days of school and then one fire drill per month after that time. A Fire Drill requires that all students and staff exit the school in a quick and orderly fashion. The staff quickly take roll and verify all students have safely exited the building. Before the drill, students and staff were reminded that it is only a practice drill, and staff remind students regarding what to do during the drill.
Virginia requires all schools to perform one tornado drill, completed in March. A Tornado Drill requires that all students and staff move to a specific location on the first floor of the school in a quick and orderly fashion, away from exterior doors and windows. The staff quickly take roll and verify all students are on the first floor. Before the drill, students and staff were reminded that it is only a practice drill, and staff remind students regarding what to do during the drill.
Please note that these drills are for practice purposes only. We are very proud of our students and staff for successful completion of these required Lockdown Drills and Fire Drills.
