CELEBRATING MUSIC INSTRUCTION AT POWELL

Music

The Colin Powell Elementary Specialist are an amazing group of teachers who specialize in specific content.  These programs include Art, Band, Digital Learning, Guidance, Library/Literacy, Language Through Content (LTC), Music, Physical Education, Speech, STEM, and Strings.

This month’s specialist highlight comes from our music department:

Band and Strings has been busy recruiting students to the program. We were so lucky to have the Centreville Wildcat Marching Band visit our school to show students what their instrumental music lessons turn into over time!  Here, Mrs. Harms poses with Pumas from Powell’s past.  Band and Strings classes start September 16!

Mrs. Baker, Mrs. Burke and Ms. Rowe are excited to be your general music teachers this year.  These first weeks of school, students in K-6 are learning how to be contributing members of the music classroom community.

A few general music announcements:

  • All students in grades 4-6 should bring their recorders and music folders to their general music class by Friday, September 20.
  • All students in 5th and 6th grade are encouraged to join Chorus: https://forms.gle/evLeEtCe7ZPGt83f6

New App - "Here Comes the Bus"

school bus

Transportation Services

Over this past school year, the Office of Transportation Services has been working to integrate multiple electronic systems, such as student information data, routing data, and GPS data from school buses into the Here Comes the Bus application. Here Comes the Bus application was piloted during summer school in anticipation of the roll out for the 2019-20 school year.

Absences Add Up!

FCPS is looking forward to a great school year! Regular attendance is essential for students to form positive peer and adult relationships and to learn. In fact, when students miss significant amounts of instructional time, they tend to lose momentum academically.

We do monitor each child’s attendance daily and will contact a parent if a child does not arrive at school or class as expected. Of course, there are times that students may have health or other concerns that may prevent them from being present. Please contact your child’s school by using its attendance telephone line, email, or online form if your child will be absent. This information can be found on each school’s web page.

More information about FCPS’ attendance expectations is available online.

Nationally-Published Author Kathryn Otoshi is coming to our school on Spetember 26 and 27th!
