WAKEFIELD FOREST ES Weekly Message

firstday

We were excited to welcome all of our students back yesterday. It was so much fun to see everyone building relationships and getting into the routines of school. The school year is already off to a great start.

Wakefield Forest uses the weekly News You Choose as one of our primary means of communication. We normally send the News You Choose message every Tuesday at noon.   If you know of any Wakefield Forest parents who are not receiving these emails, please have them call the office at 703-503-2300.   Make sure to follow us on Twitter @Wakefield Forest ES to see snapshots from around Wakefield Forest.

A Fond Farewell
We are sad to announce that Ms. Wade, our wonderful health room aide, will be leaving to return to social work. She made our health room a warm place for our students when they were unwell. We will let you know when we have a new permanent health room aide. Meanwhile, we are lucky to have Ms. Wade in the health room this week only.

Summer Reading Logs
Please remember that all student Summer Reading logs (grades 1-6) and student READ/WRITE grids (Kindergarten) are to be turned in to your classroom teacher no later than Friday, August 30.  Students who completed and return these forms will earn an invitation to our WFES Summer Reading celebration to be held on Friday, September 20.  Please contact our Reading Specialist, Suzanne Rubinstein  sprubinstein@fcps.edu if you have any questions.

Change in Lunch Schedule for Thursday, August 29
We are looking forward to the Woodson High School’s band visiting our fourth through sixth grades at an assembly this Thursday afternoon, August 29.  Because of the time of the band’s visit, we are changing the lunch times for third and sixth grades for that day only as listed below:

Marucchi – 12:55 – 1:25 pm

Linke – 1:00 – 1:30 pm

Dolinger - 1:05 – 1:35 pm

Yaman – 1:10 – 1:40 pm

Grade 6

Brooks/Friedsam - 12:35 -1:05 pm (in classrooms)

Impens/Stahl – 12:40 – 1:10 pm (in classrooms)

Community Flyer Dates
According to FCPS Regulation 1367.3, schools shall offer options to “nonprofit organizations that want to make their materials available to students and parents.”  At Wakefield Forest, we establish six dates during the school year on which we allow nonprofit organizations the chance to send flyers (subject to principal approval) home with students in Thursday folders.  The “Community Flyer” dates for 2019-2020 are as follows:

September 12, October 17, December 12, February 20, April 2, and May 28

Organizations interested in sending home flyers on the above dates should email a copy of the flyer and their request to Julia Ruskin in the main office (jsruskin@fcps.edu) at least 10 days before the Community Flyer date .  Flyers need to include the following disclaimer: "These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or this school."

Save the Dates!

Wakefield Forest Back to School Night is Wednesday, September 18.

Woodson High School Feeder Night is Friday, September 20.  This evening gives students from feeder schools a chance to run across the field before the football game.

Look for more information about both of these evenings in your child's Thursday take home folder.

Every Day Counts! Absences Add Up
As we begin another school year, here are some important school attendance reminders:
• Learn the ways to alert your child’s school when your child will be absent.
• We do monitor your child’s attendance daily, and will reach you if your child does not arrive at school or class as expected.
• Please continue to contact the school via the attendance line or email if your child will be absent. The school attendance contact information can be found on each school’s web page.
• The calendar for the 2019-20 school year has been posted. Make plans to have your child back at school, ready to learn, starting on August 26!
• More information about FCPS attendance expectations is located here.
