Keene Mill News & Notes

Many thanks to all families who joined us for our Back to School Day!  It was wonderful to see over 90% of our students and their families at school this morning!  PTA president, Marie Carpizo, and Principal Miller are excited about our opportunity to partner with our families to provide the best possible education and learning environment for all of our students!  Please contact us when there is a question or concern. Thank you for your support and being part of the KMES Kanga family!

School begins on Monday, August 26, at 9:15 a.m.!  All parents/guardians are welcome to walk their children to class on the first day of school!

School dismisses at 4:00 p.m.  Please be sure that a parent/guardian or sibling aged 12 or older is available to meet kindergarten students at bus stops.

Arriving at school and going home:  Our school is larger than it has ever been.  At this time, we have 837 students!  The streets around our school were not designed to accommodate the volume of traffic our school generates.  The safety of our students is our top priority.  For this reason, we ask that students ride the bus if they have been assigned a bus to ride.  This reduces the amount of traffic around the school and increases your child's safety.  If you need to drop off and pick up your child, please use the designated Kiss and Ride. FCPS and the police department have identified this area as the safest place for students to be dropped off and picked up. Only true walkers will be dismissed as walkers. Students who are assigned a bus will not be dismissed as walkers.  If you need to pick up your child early, please arrive in the office prior to 3:30 p.m.

What is the best way to get in line for Kiss and Ride?  Please line up in front of the school on Bardu Avenue as the red arrows above indicate.  The easiest way to get in line is to turn on Bardu Avenue from Greeley Blvd.

New Mobile App for Bus Arrivals!  FCPS Transportation Services is introducing a new school bus arrival app, Here Comes the Bus®, for the 2019-20 school year. The app is offered at no charge to parents. Here Comes the Bus® is a school bus tracking app that provides parents and guardians with real-time bus locations through text or email alerts. Here Comes the Bus® combines GPS and bus routing data in an easy-to-use, customizable app that works on one or multiple devices including smartphones, tablets, or desktop computers. The app provides timely school bus arrival information through a graphical interface as well as messaging to indicate the bus’s distance from your child’s bus stop for both morning and afternoon bus stops.

Help in your Language! FCPS language lines are available in eight different languages to assist parents who do not speak English as their first language. A school system employee will respond to your call in your preferred language within 24 hours, Monday through Friday. The caller will provide you with the requested information, arrange for you to speak with the appropriate school employee, or connect you with the resource that you are looking to find.
