Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

What a great first week of school it has been!  I am so proud of our returning students as they immediately transitioned into new classroom procedures and routines and oriented our new students to Oak Hill!  Staff members were excited to greet their new students and get to know them a little more during morning meetings.  Mr. Credle and I have enjoyed visiting classrooms and introducing ourselves to all of our new students.  We had a successful Back to School/Open House format this year and saw almost all of our families! We welcome your feedback concerning our new format and any suggestions you would like us to consider as we plan for the 2020-2021 opening.

Please consider registering for Asha-Jyothi 5K/1K Fun Run to support our technology needs at Oak Hill. This organization has graciously pledged 100% of the registration fees to all schools. You will see many pyramid school attendees at this event. Save $10 on registrations with the coupon code below when you register NOW! Thank you for helping to fund new computers for our students!

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

New for 2019: FCPS Now Using the Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

To help you know when your child’s bus is approaching your stop, FCPS is now using the Here Comes the Bus mobile app.. Here Comes the Bus is a free school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping everybody get to the bus stop on time.

Here Comes the Bus® uses FCPS global positioning system (GPS) data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet, smartphone, or desktop computer.

Parents can download the app now for free from the App Store or Google Play. You will need the FCPS school district code 28982 and a Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account (contact your child's school if you do not have an SIS Parent Account). Once signed in, you can customize or edit features, including how the app will communicate with you, and the size and location of the notification radius around your child's bus stop.

Tip Sheet for Elementary Parents

The start of a new school year is exciting. But it usually means kids and parents need to make some adjustments to their schedules.

Plan now to get your family back into an effective school year routine. Here are some ways:

  • Define the basics. Make sure your child knows what you expect when school is in session. Set a specific time to do homework. Set limits on screen time. Set aside some time each day for reading.
  • Create a chart for the first few weeks of school—until your child's routines become habits. Give him a gold star on days when he does everything without being asked.
  • Manage correspondence. The start of the school year means a lot of paper going between home and school. Set up a place where your child can put all the paperwork from school. Sign it and put it back in his book bag to return to school the next day.
  • Keep track of schedules.Post a family calendar where everyone will see it. Then have everyone write down their assignments and activities as they are scheduled. This will help you plan ahead. If your child knows a book report is due the day after a late soccer practice, he or she will see that they need to finish the report early.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms were included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) here.   Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) . FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Account information is available at your local school or online here.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.

Volunteer Guidelines

volunteer

Volunteers for both school sponsored and PTA sponsored activities are welcome and needed at Oak Hill.  There are both at school and at home opportunities to volunteer with various time commitments.  We would love to have you join us!  Below are some important volunteer guidelines.

  • A volunteer does not discuss confidential information.  Confidential information includes, but is not limited to:  scholastic and health records, test scores and grade, discipline problems within a classroom or during an activity, and character traits of an individual child.  A volunteer does not discuss such matters with friends, neighbors or other volunteers.
  • A volunteer supports the staff by following school-wide or classroom regulations regarding student behavior.
  • A volunteer must be dependable and consistent in order to provide the maximum benefit of such assistance.  Phone the school well in advance to inform the staff member when you will not be able to assist at the assigned time.  Phone the PTA committee chair well in advance when you will be unable to help with an assigned PTA function.
