GBE Happenings 8.22.19

Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It was wonderful to see so many of our students and parents at Thursday's Open House event.  The excitement of the children was contagious and it was evident they are ready for school to begin!

Please encourage your new neighbors to register their school-aged children as soon as possible.   It seems we ‘grow’ a little with each day.  A warm welcome to all of our new families and hope you are settling into our wonderful community.

We hope that you are enjoying these last few days of summer!  We’re looking forward to another wonderful year with your children and can’t wait for their return Monday, August 26th!

Sincerely,

Linda Cohen, Principal

Natalie Lorenzi, Assistant Principal

David Pietzman, Assistant Principal

School Hours

The instructional day begins with the first bell at 9:05 a.m. Monday – Friday.   Students should be in their classroom seat no later than 9:05 a.m.  Students arriving after 9:15 a.m. will be marked tardy.  Parent/Guardian will need to sign your child in at the office if their arrival is 9:15 a.m. or later.  Dismissal will start at 4:00 p.m. with buses departing by 4:10 p.m.

GBE School Hours:    Grades K – 6:  Monday – Friday  9:05 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Please note:  Adult supervision of children begins at 8:45 a.m.

Students should not arrive before 8:45 a.m.

Children who arrive between 8:45 a.m. and the first bell will wait in the cafeteria.

Student Dismissal

GBE dismissal begins at 4:00 p.m.Monday - Friday.  Daycare Vans, Walkers, SACC and Kiss & Ride are dismissed first and then we begin calling buses.  The Kindergarten bus students are placed on buses first before we call our older students.

Kindergarten students must be met at the bus stop by an adult or a student who is in middle school or above.  Kindergarten students who are not met are transported back to school and a parent will need to pick them up.

Early Pick-Up

Parents/Guardians who need to pick up children early must do so prior to 3:30pm.  Office staff will not call into classrooms between 3:30- 4:00pm as we need to focus on the safe dismissal of all of our students during that time. Exceptions will only be made for medical emergencies.

Kiss and Ride

Kiss & Ride

Motorists are not to enter the circular drive (bus loop) in front of the school when buses are loading and unloading students.  Virginia law prohibits motorists from passing a school bus with flashing red lights.

Parents must use the Kiss and Ride area when loading or unloading children.  The Kiss and Ride area is the street curb lane closest to the school (flagpole).  Students should exit the vehicle from the passenger side. If you park across the street, the corner crosswalk area must be used.  For the safety of all students, drivers are not to make “U” turns in front of the school.

Kiss and Ride Procedures:

  • Wait in line to unload/pick up your child. Follow the flow of traffic without passing vehicles in the Kiss and Ride lane.
  • Pull up as far as you can in the Kiss and Ride lane and follow directions provided by staff members.
  • Have your child ready to unload. Have your child gather his/her belongings then say your goodbyes so they will be ready when it’s your turn for your child to exit the vehicle.
  • Have your child exit from the passenger side of the vehicle and onto the sidewalk.
  • Remain in your vehicle while your child exits. Do not leave your vehicle unattended.

Cooperate with staff members assigned to the Kiss and Ride area. Staff members are on duty to supervise students’ safe entrance to and exit from the school.

Walkers

If your student is a walker, please make sure they use Door #3 or #13 for arrival and dismissal.  Parents, if you would like to pick your student up at dismissal, please make sure they know to meet you at door #3 or #13, not the front lobby.

Bus Schedules

Bus

For those students riding buses, a bus schedule was included in the mailing sent to your home last week.  You may also go to your FCPS 24-7 Learning/Blackboard account to find your child's bus information. Please have your child at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the pick-up time.

In order to establish a morning routine for your child, please plan on having your child ride the bus the first day of school.  We ask for your patience the first weeks of school as FCPS Transportation fine tunes pick-up and drop-off times.

Attention Kindergarten parents: a parent, designated adult and/or middle school aged or older sibling must be present to receive the kindergartener at the bus stop.  If there is no one to receive a kindergartener, the child will be returned to the school and the parent called.
