Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve. Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program. Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices. If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms will be included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education . Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) . FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/. Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml. Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media). Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library. Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.

Could You Be The One To Help?

Dear Friends,

One of our teachers’ husband has end-stage kidney disease. During this past year, his kidney function has continued to decline to the point that his treatment options are now limited to dialysis or a kidney transplant.  Dialysis would be very restrictive and his doctor feels a transplant would be a much better option for him.  A transplant would offer him freedom and the ability to live a longer, healthier life.  It would also give him more time to do the things he enjoys the most, like spending time with his family and friends.

Finding a kidney for a transplant is not easy.  There are 100,000+ people on the waiting list for a live donor kidney.  Some wait for years; many succumb while waiting.  Several family members and friends have already been tested, but at this point, no one has been a successful match.  This is why we are reaching out to our school community.  While we know asking someone to donate a kidney is difficult, we feel it greatly improves the chance of finding that one “perfect match” donor.

You might not know a lot about a living donation.  Understandably, some people are afraid about the surgery and what living with one kidney will mean for them. Here’s some basic information about kidney donation:

  • You only need one kidney to live a healthy, long life.
  • Most donor surgery is done laparoscopically, meaning through tiny incisions.
  • The recuperation period is usually fairly quick, generally two to four weeks.
  • The cost of your evaluation and surgery will be covered by the recipient’s insurance. The hospital can give you extensive information on this.
  • You will have a separate team of healthcare professionals to evaluate you as a living donor. Their job is to help you understand the risks and benefits and look out for YOUR best interests.

If you would be interested in donating, the first step is filling out a Living Donor Questionnaire.  The link is:  https://mgti.donorscreen.org

There is a place on the questionnaire where it asks if you are donating for a specific person.  Please enter: John Otto.  John needs an “O” blood type donor.   He is working with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital which is one of the top kidney transplant facilities in the United States.  It takes about 10 days for the questionnaire to be accepted/rejected.  If accepted, you would go through a day of further testing at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.  Any/all costs associated with the testing or possible surgery will be covered by the recipient’s insurance or the Living Donor Network.

Thank you for your consideration.
