Hollin Meadows Updates 8.18.19

welcome back

Last week of summer break! School starts in one week on Monday, August 26.

Hollin Meadows News and Updates for Aug. 19

Dear Hollin Meadows Families,

We hope this note finds you in the midst of enjoying the final days of a wonderful summer break! Although it seems like only a short time ago that the 2018-2019 school year ended and buses packed with cheering kids were seen off by equally exuberant staff, the calendar says otherwise and the new school year is right around the corner. We can report that planning and preparations for the new school year are nearly complete. New staff members have been hired and the custodial staff has spent the summer cleaning, polishing, and getting the building in “tip-top” shape. In fact, the only thing missing are the students!

The 2019-2020 school year will begin at 8:20 am. on Monday, August 26. Class lists will be posted on the school entrance by 3 pm. on Thursday, August 22.

School office hours are from 7:30 am. until 4 pm. Monday through Friday. If we can be of any assistance please don’t hesitate to come by or call us at 703-718-8300.

We are looking forward to the new school year and continuing to collaborate with students, staff members, families, and community members in our work to create a school of Excellence through Equity. Enjoy the remainder of your summer break.

Jon Gates, Principal

Donna Beaver-Young, Assistant Principal

Tieya White, Assistant Principal

Get Your Child(ren) Ready for School!

One way to ensure a positive start to school is to prepare your child for this transition. Please follow these steps this week and next:

  • Set a healthy bedtime. Aim for 8:30 pm. for all ages. If bedtime has been later, adjust back by 10 minutes each night. By 9 pm., all screens and lights should be off. Don't hesitate to take devices out of the place where your child sleeps.
  • Set aside time for independent and sustained reading. We want our kids to be "lost" in reading for at least 20 minutes. If that's a challenge, start with 5 minutes and add a minute each day.
  • Set a positive tone for school. Listen for what your child might be excited about and worried about. We all approach each situation with our own outlook. If your child is worried about something, ask what might be some ways to address that worry. Let your child share first before offering possible solutions. Our teachers, administrators and counselors are all available to help out.
  • Get school supplies. You can find out what your child needs by clicking here. Look for the grade level in which your child will be starting this fall. As always, please let us know how we can help out. We receive many donations and can assist you with making sure your child has what they need.

Welcome New Staff!

Several Hollin Meadows Hornets moved onto new adventures this past year. Several staff members moved out of state or to schools closer to their homes.
