Oak Hill teams completing a fun Scavenger Hunt to kickoff the 2019-2020 school year!

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Welcome to those families returning to OHES and a huge welcome to those of you who are new to our school community!  Please introduce yourself to Mr. Credle, Assistant Principal, and me at our Open House on Friday, August 23!  As we think about our first day of school on Monday, August 26, a friendly reminder that parents are allowed to walk their child to class the first day of school.  Beginning Tuesday, it’s Kiss and Go outside the entrances to Oak Hill.  We promise you that your child(ren) will be well taken care of and supervised every step of the way.  We’ve got this so please don’t worry.

Mr. Credle, Mrs. Rock, Mrs. Aharam, Mrs. Young and I had a wonderful time meeting our rising Kindergarten students last week and sharing a popsicle on the playground.  I hope you have followed us on Twitter @oakhilles, @principaldevore and @cliffcredle and @#ALLinOHES.  Take a look at the excitement from staff this week and our first ever scavenger hunt!  Mr. Credle and I would like to take a minute to recognize our wonderful teachers and staff for everything they have done to prepare for the 2019-2020 opening!  Our custodians worked very hard cleaning the building and preparing the grounds and our office support is the backbone of registering students, ordering supplies for classrooms, answering questions, preparing first day packets, etc… The staff is #ALLinOHES and ready to welcome your child.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Class placements for this year will be emailed to parents after 4:30pm today for the 2019-2020 school year.  Our classes were built using input from parents, staff, and administration.  Academic as well as social needs were also taken into consideration and we are confident that your child will have a successful year with their assigned teacher.   Any child who registers today will be assigned to a teacher by Friday, August 23rd.

First Day of School

The first day of school is Monday, August 26th.  If your child will not be starting school on the first day, please email our registrar, Vicki Baron at vjbaron@fcps.edu and let her know the reason and the date your child will begin.  There will be no school on Friday, August 30th and Monday, September 2nd.  The 2019-2020 school calendar can be found here

School Transportation

Daily Schedule - Oak Hill's doors open at 8:20am each morning.  Students are sent to classrooms at 8:35am so they have time to prepare for the day.  Students are marked tardy at 8:46am and will need to be escorted to the front office with an adult for check in.

Kiss 'n Ride is monitored by staff members beginning at 8:20am and ending at 8:45am each morning.  Please do not drop off students outside of these times.

Walkers - If you reside within the walking boundaries, we request your child walk to school on the first day.  Kindergarteners must be escorted to and from school.  Kindergarten parents can meet their walkers at the entrance closest to the playground.  Please wait outside the door for a staff member to reunite you with your child.  All walkers must go straight home before returning to play on Oak Hill grounds.

Bus Riders - If your child is a bus rider, you received bus information from transportation.  Please have your child access the bus on the first day.  All kindergarteners will have to be met at the bus stop by a parent or guardian for the entire school year.  If students are not met, they will be returned to Oak Hill to await parent pickup.

Bike riders - Students may ride their bicycle to school with parent permission.  Helmets must be worn and safety traffic regulations must be followed.  Oak Hill has bicycle racks on each side of the school for storage.  Students must provide their own bike locks. The school is not responsible for bicycles while on school property and bicycles must be removed each night.

Tips for a Successful School Year

  1. Restart Routines. Kids need time to adjust, so provide a head start. Dust off the alarm clock and gradually make bedtime earlier before the first day of school.  Start your child on a school-day routine – waking up, eating, and going to bed at regular times. Explain that everyone in the family needs to adjust to the new schedule, so he or she doesn’t feel alone with these changes.  Ask your child to help plan school lunches for the first week and plan a fun shopping trip to the grocery store.
  2. Go Over Ground Rules. Decide when and where he or she will do homework. Be sure to cover tricky topics: Can she watch TV after she finishes her work? How much screen time is permitted during the school week?  Will there be activities on any school nights?  Establishing guidelines and going over them together will make sure you're on the same page once school is in session.
  3. De-Stress Dressing.  Ask your child to help choose the outfits for the first week of school. Let your child wear his or her favorite outfit on the first day of school.  Together with your child, pack up his or her backpack the night before, including a snack.  For younger children who are nervous about separating, suggest taking a special object to school that reminds him of home. A reassuring note in a child’s lunch can also help ease separation anxiety.
  4. Help Manage Worries.  Anxious feelings are normal and expected during times of transition or change.   When your child expresses anxiety about going back to school -- a new teacher, increases in homework, who to sit with at lunch -- do listen seriously.  Tell your child that it is normal to have concerns.  Rather than dismissing these fears (“Nothing to worry about! You’ll be fine!) listening to them and acknowledging your child’s feelings will help him feel more secure.  Encourage your child to think of ways to solve his or her problem. For example, “If (the worst) happens, what could you do?” or “Let’s think of some ways you could handle that situation.” This gives you the opportunity to coach your child on how to cope with (and interpret) both real and imagined scary situations. You will also be giving your child the tools he or she needs to cope with an unexpected situation that might arise.  Before and during the first few weeks of school, set up a regular time and place to talk. Some children feel most comfortable in a private space with your undivided attention (such as right before bed, or during mealtime). Teens often welcome some sort of distraction to cut the intensity of their worries and feelings (such as driving in the car or taking a walk).
  5. Go For a Test Run.  If possible, attend open house on Friday so that your child can meet his or her teacher and get familiar with the new classroom.  Make sure to find the cafeteria, gym, and library. If your child needs extra support to make a successful transition, don’t hesitate to reach out to the classroom teacher and one of the school counselors (Kimberly Gallagher or Christy Ryder).

Online Free and Reduced-Price Application Information

Free and reduced-price meal applications may be completed online or by submitting a handwritten, paper application for the 2019-2020 school year.  Electronic meal applications are quick, easy, and available in the following languages:  English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Tagalog, French, and Vietnamese.

The online application and paper application include a designated section with a consent to share information for potential waiver of fees for other programs. This allows parents/guardians to complete the free and reduced-price meal application and provide consent to share information in the same document.

Paper applications must be the original red print forms, which are available at school offices, school cafeterias, and other FCPS buildings.  Copied application forms cannot be accepted.

For more information visit the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage.

Community Flyers

Twice a year we give non-profit groups the opportunity to send paper flyers home with students.  The Fall date is September 18th and the Spring date is April 1st. These flyers must relate to the schools’ primary function, the education of students.  If your group wishes to distribute a flyer, the following disclaimer must be printed on the flyers, “These materials are neither sponsored nor endorsed by the Fairfax County School Board, the Superintendent, or Oak Hill Elementary School”.  Flyers must be delivered to the school, in 35 groups of 30, by Monday, September 16th for the fall date and Monday, March 30th, for the spring date.
