MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians:

I hope you and your family were able to enjoy the summer. The 2019-2020 school year has the potential to be another wonderful year for our students and staff. In this newsletter, I will highlight the major upcoming events at Westfield.

All high school students will be issued a laptop computer. Most will pick-up their device at Westfield before the school year begins. Those who do not get a computer before school starts will be issued one in the first weeks of school. A basic expectation of all students is they will bring their computers fully charged to school each day. I believe the integration of Blended Learning practices into our teaching and students’ use of technology will be “game changers” for all students’ academic success.

We will celebrate Westfield High School’s 20th Anniversary this school year. Among the events planned are the dedication of a new banner to be displayed at doors 1 and 14, a staff photo, articles and displays of memorabilia in the school, and on October 11 – current and former staff tailgate. We will also continue our fundraising towards the renovation of our Senior Courtyard/Learning Space and the purchase of new chairs for the Lecture Hall. We will provide more information on this project throughout the school year.

Freshman and New Families to Westfield Parent Night is Thursday, August 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the auditorium. This is an opportunity to learn about Westfield and our instructional program. Dr. Copeland, Principal and Sonya Williams, Director of Student Services will be present to answer questions about your student starting at Westfield High School. Spanish translators will be available. Additional presenters include our Public Health Nurse, Dawna Poyner, RN and Jennie Ryman, PTSA President.

The Bulldog BBQ, our annual school year kickoff event, is Tuesday, August 20 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. We will unveil our new banners at the start of the BBQ. Students and Parents can see class schedules on August 22nd in StudentVue and ParentVue, respectively.

Back to School Night is Thursday, August 29 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This is an opportunity to meet your student’s teachers and learn about their expectations for students in their class. It is not a time for protracted conversations with the teacher. You are welcome to schedule a meeting with the teacher directly or you can contact your student’s counselor for assistance.

Finally, I want to encourage you to stay involved in your student’s education and learning. We are partners with you working to promote your student’s success at Westfield.  Follow your student’s progress via ParentVue. Contact your student’s teacher or counselor via email with any questions or concerns. Your attendance at school activities and events, including joining the PTSA will keep you connected to all that’s happening throughout the upcoming year. Parent involvement is key to student success.

GO BULLDOGS!

Sincerely,

Anthony E. Copeland, PhD
