Fairfax Villa Administration and PTA are eager to start the new year!
Calendar Reminder: 2019-20 School Year to Start on Monday, August 26
It’s hot and the calendar just turned to August, but as a reminder the first day of school for the 2019-20 school year will be Monday, August 26, 2019; the last day will be Friday, June 12, 2020. See the 2019-20 school year calendar.
Dear Fairfax Villa Families,
We hope you are enjoying a restful, rejuvenating summer with family and friends. 2019-2020 looks to be another wonderful year at Fairfax Villa and we are excited to kick it off with you!
As part of the preparation for our new school year, we are ensuring we are fully staffed with the best and most highly-qualified teachers for your children. However, in order to maintain our current staff numbers, we need to have all new Fairfax Villa students registered as soon as possible. Please don't hesitate to encourage any new Fairfax Villa residents to register their children promptly.
We know you are eager to learn who your child’s teacher will be. Student classroom assignments will be mailed to you around August 20th.
To help ensure a smooth transition into the first weeks of school, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Fairfax Villa Kindergarten Playdates
Kindergarten playdates are a great way for incoming Kindergartners to meet new friends and have fun at the playground. The hope is to reduce some of the anxiety some kids might be having about not knowing anyone or going to a new place. Our PTA Board Members, Principal Gerstner and Assistant Principal An will be present at both events.
When:
Wednesday, August 14th from 10:00 - 11:00 am
Wednesday, August 14th from 6:00 - 7:00 pm
Where: Fairfax Villa Blacktop/Playground
Many life long friendships, for both parents and children, are formed in kindergarten and we look forward to seeing you at one of these events.
FAIRFAX VILLA BACK TO SCHOOL
We are so excited to greet returning and new Villa Dragons for another outstanding school year! As we did last year, we will be having a combined Open House and Back to School event on the same day on August 22nd. This combined event will allow our students to explore their new classrooms and meet their teachers, as well as allow our parents to receive a curricular overview and understand class expectations for the school year.
Please note: with the exception of Kindergarten, this event takes the place of our traditional evening Back to School night. The Kindergarten Back to School night will be from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM on September 4th. The Open House for Kindergarten will remain on August 22nd.
While parents participate in the Back to School session, students will be participating in a variety of team-building activities provided by our school specialists and instructional assistants. If you have children in multiple sessions and don’t wish to leave the school between the sessions, you can have a picnic out on the field (weather permitting) while you wait.
Parking can be a challenge in our school neighborhood. As a result, we are asking for all families who reside in walking distance to please walk to and from school for this event. Parking on the school grounds will be available but limited. If necessary, you may park on the street as long as you follow the county parking guidelines.
Students MUST be accompanied by a parent to attend this event. We look forward to seeing you at the Back to School event!

Visitor Procedures
Ensuring the safety and security of Fairfax Villa students and staff is of the utmost importance. Our Visitor Management System requires all visitors to register at each visit in the main office by scanning their driver’s license. Once the visitor is confirmed, a photo is taken and the visitor’s badge is issued. This system registers and records all visitors who enter the school as well as automatically captures visitor information, photo, and visit history. Please wear the printed badge during your stay at Fairfax Villa.
School Hours
Fairfax Villa Elementary will begin at 9:00 a.m. and dismiss at 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students are expected to be in their classrooms by 9:15. Monday, August 26th is the first day of school.
Bus Riders
Bus riders should report to their respective bus stops several minutes earlier than scheduled for the first few days. Please be patient and wait for your bus to arrive and follow all safety regulations. Bus routes will be mailed or emailed to your home the week before the start of school.
Medication
If your child needs medication administered during the school year, parents may drop it off in the clinic during Open House (August 22nd from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM) as well as on the first day of school. Students are not permitted to bring their own medication to school.
Important Forms and Information
On the first day of school, students will bring home a first-day packet containing materials to be reviewed by parents. Included in the packet is your personalized Emergency Care Form that must be signed and returned to school on Tuesday, August 27th. You will also find an updated Student Rights and Responsibility (SRR) booklet with a form to be signed and returned, information on the Family Life Education (FLE) program, an optional FLE opt-out form, a permission form for using FCPS-approved websites, and a student insurance application.
Breakfast and Lunch
Many students choose to purchase school breakfast and/or lunch daily or once in a while. The school breakfast price is $1.75. The school lunch price, including milk, is $3.25. Milk and juice are also sold separately for $.60. Lunch may be prepaid in advance via MySchoolBucks or with a check made payable to Fairfax Villa Food Service. The credit will be applied to your child’s lunch account. We encourage you to always have some money on your child’s lunch account in case of forgotten lunches. The cafeteria manager, Mr. Doug Lilly, will be here during our Open House/Back to School Event on Thursday, August 22nd, to set up an account for your child and accept pre-payments. You may also add money to your student’s account at www.myschoolbucks.com. Menus and information about school lunch may be found on the FCPS website, Food and Nutrition Services .
School Supplies
A list of school supplies for each grade can be found on the Fairfax Villa web site at https://fairfaxvillaes.fcps.edu/academics/school-supply-lists . Supplies may be brought to school during our Open House or the first day of school.
We look forward to working with you and your child in what we believe will be a most exciting and successful school year. Please accept our best wishes for the coming school year. Feel free to call us at 703-267-2800 if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dave Gerstner, Principal
