Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT)

Dear Parents/Guardians of Rising Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Grade Students:

South County HS students in grades ten and eleven will have the opportunity to take a Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) on October 16, 2019.

More information about the PSAT/ NMSQT and the National Merit Scholarship Program can be found on the College Board: PSAT Home. You can also access practice items and checklists for the day of the test there.

Fairfax County Public Schools covers the registration fee for sophomores and juniors to take PSAT/ NMSQT. If a freshman is interested in taking the standard PSAT/ NMSQT he or she may do so for a $20 fee. To register a freshmen for the PSAT NMSQT please visit the PSAT Information on South County website and print out the SCHS PSAT NMSQT Registration Form and return it with the non-refundable $20 fee by cash or check made out to SCHS, by September 13, 2019.

Students who completed the test will have access to:

  • Online score report
  • AP and IB course readiness feedback
  • Khan Academy’s free online test preparation

Accommodations

Students with disabilities documented in a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) may request accommodations for the PSAT/NMSQT. Accommodations must be approved by the College Board and documentation must meet the criteria outlined on their website. Not all students with disabilities require accommodations and some accommodations received by students in school are not deemed necessary by the College Board for the purposes of participating in the PSAT/NMSQT.

Please contact Telia Johnson at tmjohnson2@fcps.edu by Friday August 16th for assistance with the application process. Requests for accommodations must be completed and received by College Board by August 27, 2019.

Students may prepare for the PSAT by visiting the PSAT Practice Tests, getting a good night’s sleep prior to the test, and eating breakfast the morning of the test. I encourage you to discuss the testing with your student. Best wishes to you and your student.
