Principal's Message

Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students,

Welcome to the 2019 -2020 school year!  I hope that you have had a wonderful summer and are ready to take on the opportunities and adventures that lie ahead. The Langston Hughes staff and students will be building on the success of last year. The academic achievements at Hughes are the result of the entire community: school staff, students, and parents working together to maintain the focus on performing at the highest level of academic attainment. We could not educate students without the many hours of dedication from the parents and families of our students. Please join the PTA and volunteer in any way during the school day or outside of school hours as your schedule permits. I count it a privilege to work together with you on the mission to develop students that are outstanding scholars and thoughtful citizens. 

Please find here some important information you will need to start the year off informed. The teachers will be arriving soon, and we anticipate all our students’ arrival on Monday, August 26, 2019. August 26 is a regular Blue day of school with classes scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. The warning bell rings at 7:25 a.m. Students who are driven to school should be dropped off at Kiss & Ride on Ridge Heights Road, avoiding the faculty parking lot and the bus lanes.

RENOVATION TIMELINE: 

Langston Hughes is benefiting from the capital investment of the taxpayers and undergoing a complete renovation of our building.  Phase 1 of construction has begun, and it will take approximately 14 months to complete.  This year we will stay put in a temporary pattern while the new addition is built.  It will be amazing to watch it go up through the school year.  Due to the construction, the Main Office is in the trailer directly in front of the school for this period, so please, as always, check into the Main office to receive a “Visitor’s” pass before entering the main building.

STUDENT OPEN HOUSE (Schedule Pick Up)

Students may pick up their class schedules during the Open House on Thursday, August 22, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. During this time, parents are invited to confirm their ParentVue accounts, return completed Emergency Care and Health information forms, purchase Health and Physical Education uniforms, place money on your child’s lunch account, and visit the PTA table for membership and spirit wear.  Student schedules will also be available on SIS ParentVue and StudentVue on August 22 if you are unable to attend.  First period teachers will also be on wall lists when students arrive August 26.  All students will receive a hard copy of their schedule in first period the first day of school.

Hughes Middle School summer office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to Noon.  The Main Office is now located in a trailer in front of the school. Student registrations are being done by appointment only.  Please call 703-715-3600 to make the appointment.

HUGHES WELCOME BACK BREAKFAST – WE NEED YOUR HELP! The Hughes PTA is hosting a Welcome Back Breakfast for our teachers and staff on Monday morning, August 19. News for Students Heading to  South Lakes High School

Laptop Distribution

South Lakes is now a one-to-one school! Laptop pick up dates are August 7 - August 16th in the Lecture Hall. For your convenience, we are offering morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours.

Students are strongly encouraged to bring their school ID cards to expedite the process.  Incoming freshmen and students who do not have their student ID’s will still be able to pick up their laptops.

Distribution Schedule

Food Pantry and Seahawk Outfitters

The Food Pantry is open for students and families over the summer. Summer hours are Thursdays from 2:30 – 5:30 PM in Room 372 with the usual pantry items as well as fresh produce from the Herndon Farmers Market.

If you would like to donate to the food pantry, you may drop off your donation to the South Lakes Main Office (open Monday – Friday from 8:30 AM – 1 PM).

Seahawk Outfitters is also open on Thursdays from 2:30 – 4:40.
