Principal's Message

Dear Colvin Run families,

This has been another wonderful year at CRES, and I am so proud of the partnership our staff, students, and school community have developed while working with you and your children. This year has flown by so quickly, and it is wonderful to spend time reflecting on the amazing opportunities we have worked together to provide our students and the cherished memories we have made in the process.

I would like to wish our sixth graders the best of luck in middle school. We know they will represent CRES well and will continue to exhibit the character traits and carry on the traditions our students are known for once they leave CRES. We will all miss their energy, spirit, and leadership.

On behalf of our amazing staff, we want to thank you for a wonderful school year and hope you have an exciting and restful summer with your family and friends. We look forward to seeing you in August.

Take care,

Mr. Junge

Summer Reading for Parents (All Grades)

Trying to find something to read this summer? Beginning in mid-September, Ms. Allen and Mrs. Grabel will host a parent book talk.  We will meet 4-5 times to discuss the book, The Self-Driven Child by William Stixrud and Ned Johnson.  More information to come in the fall.

Project CRES “Children Reading Every Summer” (All Grades)

As we prepare for summer break, CRES is encouraging each student to take time to enjoy reading a book this summer. You might decide to read while relaxing at the beach or under a shaded tree in your backyard. Have someone take a picture of you reading a book, then fill in the sheet titled, Children Reading Every Summer. Return the paper to the Front Lobby at Meet the Teacher or on the first day of school. They will be displayed around Colvin Run for you to see what your friends enjoyed reading this summer. Remember to put your first and last name on the paper.

Those students who return their paper will be entered into a drawing to create a feature video for our annual PTO Book Fair aired on CRES 4-1-1 next June. Click here to print your child’s copy.  Happy Reading!!

The Crayon Initiative-Donate used crayons (All Grades)

The Langley pyramid schools will be collecting any used crayons as part of The Crayon Initiative. This initiative collects unwanted crayons, re-manufactures them, and provides them to pediatric wards at hospitals all over the country. Art helps hospitalized children by alleviating anxiety and offering creative outlets for self-expression. In addition, The Crayon Initiative supports environmental efforts by diverting non-biodegradable crayons from the landfills.   Crayons will be collected from all the elementary schools and the middle school in this pyramid. Langley High School students will sort and mail the crayons to The Crayon Initiative as their first service project of the new school year in September 2019.

Click here to learn more about the Crayon Initiative.

There will be a bin on the table under the television in the main lobby for students to deposit their crayons on the last day of school.

Grade Level Celebrations and Activities (All Grades)

Thank you to all of our Grade Level Room Parents for their hard work this year supporting our teachers and students.  Your dedication, along with the hard work of our many, many parent volunteers, truly help make this a school community where everyone collaborates towards a common goal.  The K-6th grade students enjoyed each of the activities planned this year.  Thank you to each parent who volunteered their time this year to make our school events such an outstanding success.  Have a great summer!

Highlights of the Year (All Grades)

Cafeteria Flags- We surpassed 70 flags in our cafeteria as we continue to find ways to celebrate our diverse school community.  Each flag represents a different country represented at Colvin Run.  If your countries flag is not represented, please contact the Main Office 703-757-3000, so we can have it installed over the summer.

Project-based Learning Initiative- We are proud to have provided at least two PBLs at each grade level.  These projects provide real world application and help the students realize how the skills they learn in school translate towards solving problems.  We are so proud of our students and staff for embracing this opportunity.  They should be so proud of their hard work.

Service Learning Projects- Each grade level successfully completed a service learning project.  We are so proud of their continued dedication and active roles to making the world a better place.

Portrait of a Graduate Skills- Each grade level successfully completed the FCPS pilot Portrait of a Graduate skills initiative.  We are so proud of our students for growing as learners and demonstrating their Communicator, Collaborator, Critical & Creative Thinker, Global & Ethical Citizen, and Goal Oriented & Resilient skills in the classroom.

Proudly Representing CRES- We had numerous students represent CRES at various academic competitions, concerts, and exhibitions during the school year and several teachers attend professional development or present at area conferences regarding the wonderful opportunities CRES provides students.  We are so proud of your effort and dedication to being lifelong learners.

Volunteer Hours- Parents and family members volunteered over 10,500 hours this school year.  We appreciate your continued partnership and collaboration to support our students and staff as we continue our work together as a CRES family.

Virginia Board of Education Excellence Award- We earned the VIP Board of Education Excellence Award, meeting all state & federal accountability benchmarks and making significant progress toward goals for increased student achievement and expanded educational opportunities.
