HORNET HAPPENINGS
June 10, 2019
Paint Night was a Smashing Success!
Thank you to Mr. Singh for sharing his gifts and talents, our wonderful PTO volunteers for helping to facilitate and sponsor this event and to all the amazing families and students that participated. It was a marvelous time had by all!
End of Year Thoughts…
It’s hard to believe that it’s already the end of the school year. What a tremendous year we’ve had! It has been an honor and a privilege to lead such an amazing school community. The level of collaboration and commitment from teachers and staff has been outstanding. Additionally, we couldn’t be more proud of the students and how hard they have worked this year!
It is amazing to think of the growth our Hornets have made physically, emotionally, developmentally, and academically. Take a minute to think back to the beginning of the school year and list three things your child can do now that they could not do back in August… From learning their ABCs to learning to ride a bike to solving tricky algebraic math problems😊. This year has gone by in a blink of an eye, and we will all be sad to say goodbye to our students on June 13th. We will particularly miss our 6th graders who will be moving on to middle schools in the fall. We wish them the very best and encourage them to remember the lessons that they learned here and to stay in touch with their Halley family.
Halley is a very special place for many of us for many different reasons. For me, it’s the people…the students, the parents, and the staff. I love seeing the smiling faces of the students each day as they learn and grow, the dedication of the staff members to know each child by name and by need, and the supportive parents who do whatever they can to take care of their students and our school. I feel blessed to serve as your principal! Have a safe and fun summer!

Student Early Pick Up
The end of the year is very busy here at Halley. Our SOL testing is complete, and end-of-the-year celebrations have begun. Please keep your eye on your email for information from the school and add important dates to your calendar. It’s also very important to send an email or note to the teacher in the morning if you need to pick up your child early. With special events happening, classes may not be adhering to their normal schedules, so locating them upon your arrival may take extra time. Sending a note allows the teacher to have the child ready and informs the office of your arrival time and child’s whereabouts. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

Keep Your Students Engaged in
Learning Through the Summer
Summer vacation starts next week. Parents often wonder what they can do with their students to keep them actively engaged in learning. Summer learning experiences are crucial to student success. In fact, most students lose about two months of reading and math learning over the summer months. This is often referred to as “the summer slide.” When students return to school in the fall, their reading level has often decreased by at least a level (if not more) and math learning from the previous year is not retained. This summer slide required teachers to spend about a month and a half re-teaching previously taught content, while attempting to teach new content at the same time. This summer slide is even more detrimental to lower income families who do not have as much access to summer learning activities.
What are some FREE learning activities to keep your students actively engaged this summer to avoid the summer slide? Below are some websites filled with great summer learning activities:
