Glasgow Community Gazette - June 9

Glasgow Community:

It is hard to believe, but this week marks the last week of school. The last day will be this Thursday, June 13 and students will be released from school at 11:15 (three hours early).

On Friday, the admin team and I chaperoned the 8th grade dance along with many other parents and faculty members. It was a wonderful event. Thanks to the SGA and parent volunteers, the cafeteria was completely transformed into a tropical themed getaway with a photo booth, balloon arch, and candy table. The slideshow was a highlight, and getting to see photos of our 8th graders over the last three years reminded us all just how far they have come during their time with us. It was special to see them dressed up, enjoying each other, and celebrating all their accomplishments over the last three years. You can check out photos from the dance on my twitter handle: @ShawnDeRose.

After five very full weeks, SOL testing concluded last Friday. From proctoring to remediating, every staff member in the building contributed to this significant undertaking. Now that all SOL testing is complete, SOL score reports will be distributed to students during Period 7 to take home on Monday, June 10. Teachers will be sharing scores privately and one-on-one with students. In addition,

These final days of school are a time for us to celebrate with our students and to help them look forward into the future with yearbooks, and field day activities throughout the week. It is also a great time for staff, students and parents to reflect back on the year and say goodbye as we head into the summer.

Thank you for your support all year long!

Glasgow Goodies

Congrats End of Year Student Award Winners! - Congratulations of all of our grade level award winners.  Shoutout to our 8th grade award winners: President’s Award: Elisabeth Bellem; Ellen Glasgow Award: Fausto Flores Alvarez; Principal’s Award: Haytam Tahri and Aisha Ismael.

Thank you to our Student Services Department for coordinating three outstanding student awards ceremonies. We were able to invite staff and parents to recognize hundreds of our students for their accomplishments this school year.

Glasgow Wins National KidWind Challenge - Glasgow’s 2019 KidWind team won the national middle school champion and wind tracker awards at the KidWind National Competition. In order to win their national award, the team of Arthur Prudius, Darren Nguyen, and Edward Meagh had to solve a critical on-site design problem. Their solution was key to allowing them to become the top contender in the yawing tunnel and securing the Wind Tracker Champions’ award.

Under the name Team Zephyr, the three students competed in two regional competitions and one national competition. The team qualified to attend the national competition by winning second place in the open generator competition at the Dominion Energy KidWind Challenge. These first-time competitors also won the Geek Award by scoring the highest on the middle school division knowledge test. Applying lessons learned in their technology class, the team used their 3D printing skills to print their turbine and won first place and the best blade design award at a KidWind regional competition in Washington, D.C. Contact Aaron Cannon at acannon@fcps.edu or Angela DeHart at adjeterjones@fcps.edu.

Glasgow Band Students Selected for the Virginia Winds Academy - Congratulations to Sabrina Ehmann-Jones, Indigo Brookes-Weiss, Miles Stadtler, Sam Brent, Noah Canzoneri-Crozier, and Eli Canzoneri-Crozier for being selected to participate in the Junior Virginia Winds Academy’s 2019-20 season! This is an auditioned group that will meet and perform throughout the 2019-20 school year. These students work with some of the best band students from across Northern Virginia, and will be under the baton of Linda Gammon, one of the best music educators in the business. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments, and looking forward to hearing them perform!

Rising 9th Grade Activities Fair is Huge Success - Special shout out to Justice High School for hosting the Rising 9th Grade Activities Fair last Thursday.  The event provided students and parents more information about clubs, activities and athletic programs. Please encourage your student to get involved in a fall sport or activity as they transition to high school.

Pops Concert Wows Audience! - Congrats to our band, chorus, and orchestra students who performed last week at our annual Pops Concerts. This event was another great way to showcase our talented students to the student body and families.

8th Grade Dance was “The Best Night Ever!” - Special The Glasgow Middle School Student Government Association (SGA) and PTA for sponsoring our annual 8th Grade Dance! It was a fun, festive and sentimental evening as we celebrated their growth over their time at Glasgow.

HUGE thanks to Marc Parella and Curg Lines for all their help coordinating the event. Thank you to our incredible parent volunteers who worked throughout the day and evening to set up, organize and clean up. There is no way the night would have been successful if it weren’t for the help of these awesome people.

Glasgow’s Unified Team Competes in the Little Feet Meet - Last week the Unified Panthers traveled to George Mason High School to compete in the Little Feet Meet. The athletes and buddies participated in a variety of events and activities including the 50 meter sprint, long jump, and softball toss. The meet was a great way to end our Unified Track season and we are all looking forward to next year! Thank you to everyone who helped support our Unified teams!

Back to School Night at the secondary level is an opportunity for you to meet your student’s teachers, see their classrooms, and hear about what each class will look like for your student. You will spend 10 minutes in each classroom, hearing from the teacher(s) of that class. Given the time constraints of the evening, we invite parents to email teachers directly with any specific questions or information you would like them to know about your student. Our teachers love to hear from you, and are always available for scheduled conferences throughout the school year.
