Cardinal's Message

Cardinal's Message

Dear Families and Friends,

Our last full week of school was packed with amazing celebrations of learning!

The week started with showcases of the CPES fine arts department.  Our band, strings, and chorus put on two extraordinary performances, where all of the students’ hard work was beautifully on display.  The growth within the three ensembles is astounding!  Thank you to Ms. Thomas, Ms. Easton, and Dr. K for bringing out the best in our young musicians. Congratulations to our performers for giving it all your heart!

Wednesday, our sixth grade held their annual Probability Fair.  Students had worked hard to invent games that tested their mathematical understandings of probability. When fifth graders arrived to play the original games, they rose to the challenge of thinking strategically and learning how the games worked.

Thursday, Mother Nature cooperated for the entire school to participate in Field Day.  All grades enjoyed the activities that the PE department taught and coordinated.  Congratulations to Mr. Winfree, Mrs. Petty (who had organized much before leaving for maternity leave), and Ms. Sinclair (our guest PE teacher) for a successful and fun day!

Field Day concluded with an all-school relay race, and then a surprise! During our Read-a-Thon earlier this year, the two of us extended a reading challenge we were certain the student body could never achieve. But Cardinals always rise to the occasion, and together, students of CPES read more than we ever expected! Since students won the challenge, they got to hit the both of us in the face with pies. That will for sure show us to never underestimate our students again!

Friday, sixth grade celebrated their own unique future potential by hosting a Portrait of a Graduate Fair.  Using their positive traits, students figured out careers they might like to pursue.  They researched various paths that could help them achieve their goals.  The displays of the of their findings took over the cafeteria, and parents, students, and friends of Cunningham Park were blown away by the bright possibilities our students uncovered within themselves!

Before we close this edition of Cardinal's Message, we share some bitter-sweet news of one of our beloved Cunningham Park family members. Alice Bredin-Karny, who has taught art at CPES for more than 30 years, is capping her long, celebrated career in retirement. It is impossible to estimate the number of lives Ms. Karny has touched, and her mark will always remain on our hearts. She looks forward to a future with family, and to adding to the beauty of the world through original works of art. We wish Ms. Karny the best, with the greatest appreciation for her dedication to our children.

We hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend. Here’s to the upcoming “Final Four” – four final days of the 2018-2019 school-year. It has been a wonderful year!

Sincerely,

Katie Le, Principal and Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal
