FCPSOn Laptop Collection

This week we collected FCPSOn computer equipment.  Thank you to our students for a wonderful and smooth collection this week.  Also, thank you to our community for supporting us with this process and your understanding as we collected over 1,000 computers, charger and cases.

If you received an email from us, then unfortunately, that means your child has an item (charger, computer or case) that either needs to be turned in or  payment needs to be made for the item. Students are welcome to bring payment or their lost item in during their next PE class or Mr. Poumade's office in the library during the school day. Please provide the exact amount for reimbursement.

Payment is due before our 7th grade picnic/8th grade event on Wednesday, June 12th. Any outstanding charges may impact your child’s participation in our year-end events and the charges will carry over into the following school year.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!

PLEASE READ-IMPORTANT INFORMATION

REGARDING NEXT WEEK’S END OF YEAR ACTIVITIES

END OF YEAR CELEBRATIONS

Our end of year celebrations are next week and we still have several open volunteer positions for both parties.  Please consider volunteering.  This event is completely for our students!  We also want to remind parents that in an effort to be eco-friendly, we are asking ALL 7th and 8th graders to bring a reusable bottle filled with water on June 12th.  We will be able to refill bottles as needed, but prefer to start out with a full bottle.  All of the kids that bring a full reusable water bottle will be given a treat at the beginning of the party!  To volunteer, please see the sign-ups below:

7TH GRADE END OF YEAR PARTY VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP

8TH GRADE END OF YEAR PARTY VOLUNTEER SIGN-UP

Please make sure your eighth grade students adhere to the following:

  • Athletic shirts and shorts for water activities and field games
  • Sunscreen (provided by home)
  • Reusable water bottles

BASKIN ROBBINS

We are so grateful to all who made the Baskin Robbins fundraiser on Wednesday night a huge success!  A special thanks to Wassim Ghali, his wife and staff for their generous support.  Big shout outs to our fabulous guest scoopers and of course, our Franklin community for joining us!

PTA MEETING

Next week is our final PTA meeting for the year.  It will be held in the library at 9:30 am on Tuesday, June 11th.  We hope to see many of you there!

PTA BOARD POSITIONS

There will not be a PTA next year if we do not have anyone volunteer for the board!  We have several board positions that need to be filled for next year. Most importantly - President and Treasurer. Holding a position on the PTA board is seriously THE BEST way to know what is going on in middle school!! You don't need to be a veteran PTA volunteer to be on the board......you just need to have a desire to help our school, our staff, and our students!  All parents of rising 8th graders, please consider stepping up! And, EVERYONE, please share our need with parents of rising FMS 7th graders.

Please email us at membership@franklinmiddleschoolpta.org with any questions.

We thank you for your willingness to get involved!

2018-19 Updates for Naviance/Family Connection and Student Learning Plan

Naviance Student is the new, mobile accessible experience, and will no longer be named Family Connection. This experience will help students answer the questions that will shape their future. Who am I? What do I want to do in my future? How will I get there? How Will I Succeed? Naviance Student is easy to use with familiar layouts and workflows and, just like Family Connection, it is accessible to both students and parents. Students will continue to access Naviance Student via their FCPS 24-7 learning site and parents can view their student’s account as it is a part of the FCPS 24-7 Learning: Parent View

The Student Learning Plan will be changing its name to align with the Virginia Department of Education and will be referred to as the FCPS Student Academic and Career Plan effective for the 2018-19 school year.  All tasks previously completed within the Student Learning Plan will remain in the student’s Academic and Career Plan which is stored in Naviance Student, formerly known as Family Connection.

For more information, please review the Academic and Career Plan https://www.fcps.edu/academics/graduation-requirements-and-course-planning/student-learning-plan or the Academic and Career Plan website or watch this YouTube Video: https://youtu.be/IiwZMJuyMtY

Please review letter requiring Parent Verification by July 10, 2019.  The letter can be found by clicking here.

HS Credit Course Expunge Process

High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA) and weighted as such. Virginia state and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians of a middle school student who has completed a high school credit course to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

The request to remove a course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.  Here is the link to the form that should be submitted to your child’s school counselor.  If you have questions or concerns regarding this, please contact your child’s school counselor.

Online Geometry Honors – Summer Programs for Rising 9th Graders

Rising 9th grade students who are considering taking online Geometry Honors this summer, please be advised, some high schools have closed their face-to-face Algebra 2 Honors courses. Prior to enrolling in summer school math courses, please consult your child’s high school about how this summer program will affect their courses next year and beyond.

Course Selection Update

At this time, parents are able to see their student’s course selections in Parent Vue. Please review your child's schedule and contact your school counselor for any questions. Please note that June 25th is the deadline to change course requests for next year. A letter will soon be mailed to your home with a copy of the course selections as well as additional remediation or placement courses with an opportunity for parent opt-out.  Staffing is based on students' course requests and therefore, their course selection requires a firm commitment. Students are recommended for placement in intervention courses based on their academic needs. Please contact your child's subject teachers and school counselor for questions regarding intervention courses.

Student Intention Forms Moving this summer?  If your family plans include relocation, please notify us by completing the Intention Form and send it to our Registrar, Teresa Wyne TWyne@fcps.edu at your earliest convenience.

Please continue to check the FMS website for updates over the summer on student supply lists, and important upcoming dates for our Rising 7th Graders!

Reminder About Student Medications

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services . A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your physician. Over-the-counter medication given for headache, muscle pain, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps and antibiotic or anti-viral medication do not need a physician signature. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form.

Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. All prescription medication, including physician’s samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or physician. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time interval for administration.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide Mrs. Donna McAllister, at (703)904-5110, or your school public health nurse, Phoebe Zuo, RN, PHN II, at xzuo@fcps.edu

Thank you for your cooperation and have a good summer!
