Important Update to the Tdap Immunization Requirement

Effective July 1, the Tdap booster will no longer be required for students entering sixth grade. Instead, the Tdap booster will be required for students entering seventh grade. Students, including current sixth graders, who have received a Tdap at age seven or older will meet the school immunization requirement for Tdap and will not need another dose prior to entering seventh grade.

Fairfax County Public Schools tracks compliance with this state requirement and seventh grade students who do not meet the requirement before August 26 will not be able to start school.

Rising 9th-12th Grade Families: Important Update About FCPSOn

FCPSOn, our digital transformation initiative, will expand to all Fairfax County public high schools starting with the 2019-20 school year. FCPSOn provides equitable access to technology and to instructional practices that support students' development of Portrait of a Graduate attributes.

As part of the initiative, all high school students will be issued a laptop for learning at school and at home. An annual technology support fee of $50 will be charged to high school students. This fee will help ensure students have access to the technology they need by defraying the cost to repair and replace equipment, ensuring all students have the necessary laptops for testing, and providing back-up laptops as a substitute as needed.

Tip Sheet for Parents: Adapt Along with Your Teen

Children change a lot during the teen years, both physically and emotionally. As this happens, the adults in their lives need to adjust also. To support your maturing teen:

  • Learn what's typical for teens his or her age. It's natural, for example, for teens to challenge authority more often. This helps them understand adults' views and develop their own values.
  • Enforce important rules, even when your teen complains. Setting limits shows that you care. But listen to and consider his opinions. Explain rules. Don't say, "Because I said so."
  • Gradually give your teen new responsibilities. But only give responsibilities that you believe he or she can handle.
  • Make time when your teen wants to talk. He or she may be less open with you at this age, so take advantage of any chances.
  • Remember what it was like to be his or her age. Listen to his or feelings without lecturing or trying to solve every problem.
  • Give your teen more privacy. Knock before entering his or her room. At his or her annual medical checkup, make time for him or her to talk with the doctor alone.
