French Mosaic Project

French Mosaic Project

This mosaic was designed and created by Madame Binczewski’s and Monsieur Ament’s French 1, French 2, French 3, French 4 and AP French students.

The design represents a stained glass window in the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral.  Individual French students put each piece of the mosaic in place.  Together, French students show unified support of efforts to repair and rebuild the beautiful Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral.

National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Twenty-six Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students from 12 high schools have been named winners of 2019 Merit Scholarship awards by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The students are part of a group of more than 3,500 National Merit® finalists chosen to receive scholarships financed by higher education institutions.

Woodson's scholarship winner is:

Daniel Braun (psychology), National Merit University of Alabama Scholarship.

Each scholarship winner was evaluated on his or her academic record; an essay and information about extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions; SAT scores that confirmed outstanding test performance; and a recommendation and endorsement from a high school official. Each award provides between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the recipient’s scholarship.

National Center for Woman and Information Technology Award

Woodson sophomore, Emanda Seifu was awarded the 2019 NCWIT (National Center for Woman and Information Technology) Certificate of Distinction for her computing-related aspirations, demonstrated interest in technology, leadership ability, persistence in pursuing her interests in computing, and plans for postsecondary education.

Seifu is part of the STEM Impressionists group, an afterschool mentoring program that works with middle and high school minority girls interested in exploring topics in STEM and careers in STEM.  Through that organization, she has had the opportunity to teach other students and teachers what she has learned, and has spoken about her experiences at George Mason University and TJHSST.

Grad Walk at Olde Creek

Members of the Class of 2019 visited their elementary schools during Graduation Walks on Monday, June 3rd.

Important Update About FCPSOn

FCPSOn, our digital transformation initiative, will expand to all Fairfax County public high schools starting with the 2019-20 school year. FCPSOn provides equitable access to technology and to instructional practices that support students' development of Portrait of a Graduate attributes.

As part of the initiative, all high school students will be issued a laptop for learning at school and at home. An annual technology support fee of $50 will be charged to high school students. This fee will help ensure students have access to the technology they need by defraying the cost to repair and replace equipment, ensuring all students have the necessary laptops for testing, and providing back-up laptops as a substitute as needed.

Find out more about the technology support fee for FCPSOn.

New Student Summer Tours

All new transfer students (grades 9-12) and rising 9th grade students are invited to take tours of Woodson High School this summer. Student-led tours will be taking place from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm on July 29th, July 31st, and August 6th.

To schedule a tour, please contact Woodson’s registrar Mrs. Lieb-Mosley at 703-503-4622 or via email at CLiebMosley@fcps.edu.

All tour time slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. In the event you cannot book a tour (and even if you do book a tour), we encourage all students to attend Cav Kickoff on August 22nd. At Cav Kickoff students will receive their schedule, locker information, have a chance to explore the building, and learn more about clubs, activities, and other ways to get involved in the Woodson community.

Where Are You Going to School Next Year?

If you will not be attending Woodson or a Fairfax County high school this fall, please let Woodson Student Services know now.

Please click here and fill out this form.  Student Services will make sure all transcripts are forwarded to your child’s new school so his/her file is complete.  If you have any questions, please contact Woodson registrar Christine Lieb-Mosley at 703-503-4622 or cliebmosley@fcps.edu.

Upgrades to PE Uniforms

Are you interested in purchasing an upgraded PE uniform, Woodson sweatshirt or sweatpants for next year?  If so, visit the Online Store to purchase by Sunday, June 16th.  Orders will get delivered to the school the week of July 29th for distribution.

This is for upgrades only.  Base PE uniforms and limited sweat pants/shirts will be available for purchase the first week of the 2019-2020 school year.

FCPSOn Volunteer Opportunity

We are excited to be participating in the FCPSOn initiative. In order to ensure that every student is ready for the first day of school we will have five distribution dates at various times in August. It is our hope that everyone will be able to pick up their computers prior to the start of school.

In order for us to reach this goal we need help from the community. Please consider signing up for shifts to help with distribution. Students can earn service learning credit for helping. To sign up please visit https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b45afaf2aa20-fcpson. If you have any questions about volunteering or distribution, please contact Stephanie Pollack (sepollack@fcps.edu).

Career Center Volunteers

Many or our W.T. Woodson Career Center (CC) Parent Volunteers are graduating this year.  CC volunteers have a unique opportunity to learn about the post-secondary research and application process during their volunteer shifts.  Parents of rising 9th and 10th grade students especially benefit because they will feel more comfortable when it is time for their students to embark on post-secondary research.  To provide consistency, volunteers are asked to commit to a shift for an entire academic year.  Interested parents can sign up at https://tinyurl.com/Vol4WTW.  Register by or before Thursday, June 6th for best consideration.

Cav Hack Sponsors Needed

Woodson's second annual hackathon, CavHack, is coming up!

A hackathon is a 12-hour coding event in which students enhance their coding skills. Last year, CavHack hosted over 120 students and this year we're looking to host over 150!

Currently, the CavHack team is looking for sponsors, so If you or your company is interested in being a sponsor, please send an email to woodsonhackathon@gmail.com for more information!
