McLean Senior Ethics Day Returns Beginning with the Class of 2020
The PTSA is excited to announce the return of McLean Senior Ethics Day beginning with the Class of 2020 on September 10, 2019. This remarkable event challenges our seniors to prepare for ethical decision-making in life after high school. Students work through dilemmas on topics including the legal responsibilities of turning 18, moving into the workforce or college life, and ethical issues that arise when making decisions affecting others in a community and individual context.
Help positively impact our students as they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives. The Ethics Day Committee is looking for parents to assist in organizing this early fall event.
Sponsorships are also available. To assist with the committee or to find out more contact us at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4AAAA628A13-mclean1

The PTSA Hospitality Committee has established a tea station for the teachers and staff. It's a favorite and great way to show our appreciation.
Please sign up to send in items on as many Fridays as you like. Your student can drop them off in the office on your assigned mornings. The tea station is located down the first hall you see as you enter the office at the end near the kitchen.

Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is FCPS policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, Julie Gamboa, at 703-714-5710 or jgamboa@fcps.edu.
Reflections Arts Program –Explore the Arts and Express Yourself
For 50 years, National PTA’s Reflections program has helped students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.
The theme for the 2019-2020 program year is Look Within. Students submit their completed works of art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts. It is never too early to plan ahead! Look for posters and announcements in the fall regarding submission information and deadlines. Several MHS students won awards last year.
Student winners from the local level have the opportunity to move up through their district, region, and state PTA programs to the national level. Questions? Email sliberatore@nvcc.edu for more information.

Vaping: What Students Should Know
Many students believe that vaping or Juuling is a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes, but that's not true. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that e-cigarettes are not safe for children, teenagers, or young adults. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can impact brain development. Some e-cigarettes also contain other harmful chemicals such as:
-
Nicotine – Active component of tobacco and found in pesticides.
-
Formaldehyde – A gas often used in building materials, manufactured wood, adhesives, and other materials.
-
Cadmium – Metal found in batteries.
-
Arsenic – A poisonous substance that is often used to kill rodents.
