Cameron Elementary School Updates

Photo of students playing a game during Field Day

Our 2019 Cameron Field Day was a great success! Every student had a chance to participate in active, fun activities both inside and outside. Parent volunteers, teachers and staff enjoyed a day full of laughs and sunshine. Here, students play a variation on the game, "Duck, Duck, Goose," where chosen students get drenched with cool water.

Every Day Counts! Absences Add Up

Parents and guardians, as we conclude another school year, here are some important school attendance reminders:

  • FCPS will continue to monitor your child’s attendance up to the last day of school, which is June 13. Please note earlier dates for graduating seniors.
  • Notifications will continue if your child has not arrived at school or class as expected.
  • Please continue to contact the school via the attendance line or email if your child will be absent. The school attendance contact information can be found on each school’s web page.
  • The calendar for the 2019-20 school year has been posted. Make plans to have your child back at school, ready to learn, starting on August 26!

Medication Pick Up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time at 1:05 p.m. on the last day of school June 13, 2019. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services.   If your student has medication in the health room this year, a letter was sent home in the backpack and blank forms for next year were included for your convenience. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, Susan Melendez, at (703) 329-2110, or your school public health nurse, Christine Notarianni, at (703) 329-2111.

Thank you for your cooperation

Summer By the Numbers infographic

Did you know studies show that students can lose up 2 months of reading skills and 2.6 months of math skills over the summer?  This is known as the summer slide.  You can help prevent the summer slide and keep your student growing all year long with these simple tips:

  • Students should read or do learning activities for 2-3 hours per week (or just 20-30 minutes a day) to prevent summer learning loss.
  • Reading just 4-6 chapter books over the summer has been shown to be effective in preventing summer slide.
  • Students can access Dreambox, MyOn, and Reading Ally as easy tools for learning all summer long.
  • The Fairfax County Public Library has FREE programs to keep students reading all summer.
