June 7, 2019 - Family Newsletter

The second to last week of school was very busy. Thank you to everyone that came in to volunteer at our Field Days. We cannot hold important events like this for your children without your help. Also, thank you to our P.E. staff - Melissa Brown, Jenny Murray, Jenna Welsh, and Don Dillon for all their work to prep and implement such a great event. This week we welcomed back our Union Mill alumni that are graduating tonight from Centreville High School. It was great to see our former students be so successful in high school and we wish them well as they go to that next stage of life. Our Family Fitness for a Cause held its 3rd annual 5K fun walk/run on Sunday, June 2, at Burke Lake Park. The weather cooperated and we had a great turnout, and most important, we were able to raise over $1,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Click on the photo below to see more from our 5K.

Family Fitness ended their year-long Monday meetings this week with a friendly staff vs. parents pick-up basketball game at Liberty Middle School (see photos in the Week of June 3 album). We hope to have more families join our group next year. #OtherPeopleMatter

Sixth grade parents should mark Wednesday, June 12, on the calendar as that is the day for our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony. The ceremony begins at 9:00 AM and plan to arrive early to check in and be sure to bring your license to sign into our system in the office. The line will be long so plan accordingly so you don't miss the ceremony.

The week brought our 4th grade Strings Concert and our 5th and 6th grade Band Concert. Our students sounded wonderful and that is due to our wonderful teachers - Katherine Kelley and Melissa Brown, Strings teachers and Laura Seifried, Band teacher. Please click on the picture below to see more from these wonderful concerts.

We held our last Outdoor Opening this week where we installed our SCA officers for the 2019-20 school year. Some of our 5th graders were also recognized by GMU for being the first and second place finishers in the Stock Market Game from over 400 elementary schools. Captain Positivity and Admiral Attitude also made a visit to remind everyone that #OtherPeopleMatter. Click on the photo below for more from the Outdoor Opening.

This time of year is a time for growth and changes. One of the changes for us is when staff members move on and do something new. As of now, we do have a some staff members that we will be saying good-bye to at the end of next week. Lindsay Knittle will be moving to Alabama, Jackye Toth will be taking a counseling position at Terra Centre, Kelly Mitchell will be moving to New Mexico, and Andrew Kerper will be teaching middle school chorus in Prince William County. We also have some staff members that will be moving on to other FCPS schools so we will say adieu to Katie North, Molly Cronin, Tess Bresnahan, and Tayler Dodson. If you happen to see any of these staff members, be sure to wish them well and thank them for their dedication to Union Mill.

Lost and Found

Our Lost and Found is bursting at the seams. Please stop by to see if you can claim any of your family's items. If you do not see what you are looking for, please ask. We have so many items that all cannot be displayed in the cafeteria. All remaining items will be donated to charity at the end of the school year.

Yearbooks Distributed Today

Yearbooks were given to students to bring home today. We have a limited amount of yearbooks for sale. Sales will be limited to 6th grade students on Monday and if there are any remaining yearbooks, other students may purchase yearbooks beginning Tuesday. There are some hardcover books which will be $20 and softcover books are $18. You must come into the office to purchase the yearbook with cash and sales are on a first come, first serve basis. Please have the correct amount as schools are not allowed to have petty cash to make changes.

Student Account Balance

Please remember to add money to your child’s school nutrition account.  All accounts must be paid before the end of the school year in June.
