KG June Update #1

field day

Field Day Fun!  A shout out to Shelley Deemer and Leigh Avery and to all of our parents who supported!!

School News

Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast – June 4th at 8 a.m. in Courtyard!  Join us in the courtyard (weather permitting) and we would love to THANK YOU! For all of your support this school year.  We look forward to seeing you at 8 a.m. and then you can join us for the last PTA meeting.

Update to Sixth Grade Farewell!  We have worked hard to secure an appropriate facility to ensure parking and seating for families, comparable to our previous facility at Temple Rodef Shalom, which is now under renovation.  We are pleased to announce that the location for the Sixth Grade Farewell will be at Holy Trinity, 850 Balls Hill Road, McLean Va. This facility will be able to accommodate our needs.  Each student will receive 4 tickets on Wednesday of this week in an envelope and will bring home via backpack.  Please check in with your child.  We cannot offer additional tickets but you are welcome to coordinate with other parents. We look forward to seeing you all at the Sixth Grade Farewell on the 13th of June at 6:00 p.m. We anticipate the ceremony to end at 7:15 p.m.  Please have your child dress appropriately - it will be a wonderful evening.

RISING fourth, fifth and sixth grade students, we need your help!  As we plan for the next school year, please work with your child to choose a musical option for specialsALL rising fourth, fifth and sixth students should complete the form https://forms.gle/UnfQaHnp6THTRc97A .

  • The majority of RISING fourth graders choose a strings instrument.  This option provides the opportunity to experience reading of music and an opportunity to play a strings instrument.  We highly recommend that your fourth grader chooses a strings instrument.  In fifth grade, your child can choose a strings instrument or band instrument. Note that your child will still have general music.
  • For RISING fifth and sixth graders, you have the option of playing either a string instrument or a band instrument.   Either experience is beneficial for students in continuing to explore musical instruments and develop their musical experience.  These experiences can take students through middle and high school!  We highly recommend ALL students choose a band or strings instrument.  Chorus is also offered to ALL students in addition to the band and strings option.
  • If you have questions or concerns, please contact Anita Su, asu@fcps.edu regarding Strings enrollment and either Art Pittman, jpittman@fcps.edu, or Ted Frederick Thfrederick@fcps.edu regarding band questions.

The link to sign up is here:  https://forms.gle/UnfQaHnp6THTRc97A  Thanks as always for your support and help by completing.

End of Year Updates:

Bus Notes: The last day to use Bus Passes this school year is Friday, May 24, 2019. After that date, all transportation changes and early pickups are to be communicated directly to your child's teacher and to the attendance line (703-394-5656) or email KentGardensESAttendance@fcps.edu  until the last day of school. After-school play dates cannot be scheduled on the buses after May 24. We anticipate that the bus notes will resume on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Medication Pick-up:  The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school (June 13 at 12:20 p.m.). Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your child.   If you require Authorization Forms for the 2019-2020 school year, they may be downloaded from the FCPS website at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services.

Student Lunch Accounts: Any money left on your child’s lunch account will remain in the account for the next school year.  If your child will transfer to another Fairfax County school, the lunch account will be sent to the new school.  If you will be leaving FCPS entirely and have money remaining on the account, please call Myeong Chung, Cafeteria Manager, at 703-394-5600.

Library News: Note that the last day for student check out will be Friday, May 24th.  All student library books are due back to the library by Friday, May 31st.  You will receive frequent reminders of your child’s overdue books.  All books will be overdue on June 3rd.  If you believe your child has returned the book, we are happy to check the shelves.  Lost materials should be reimbursed.  Please send in exact payment in the form of cash, checks made payable to Kent Gardens Elementary School.  Questions should be directed to Karen Hershey, kehershey@fcps.edu or Susan Bennett Spellman, sabennettspe@fcps.edu . Thank you for your help and support of our library!

Summer Office Hours:  Summer office hours begin Monday, June 17.  The office will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday – Friday.  Other hours by appointment only. The office will be closed Thursday, July 4th and Friday, July 5th, in honor of Independence Day.
