I am pleased to announce that once again, Floris Elementary School has been selected to receive the 2018-2019 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) Board of Education Excellence Award based on data from school years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. A school receives this distinguished award for being accredited and for making significant progress toward educational goals established by the Board of Education and the governor. Congratulations to our staff, students and families for contributing to our school’s success!
This week we held our annual Field Day! Thank you to Mrs. O'Neal and Mrs. Mallon for organizing this wonderful event for our students. Thank you to all our volunteers for your support of this fun event.
As part of our series in honoring staff who will be moving on, today we bid farewell to third grade teacher Ms. Jordan Mezey. While Ms. Mezey has only been with us for one year, she has certainly had a positive impact on her third-grade students. Walk into her classroom any day of the week and you will notice a buzz in the air. Her students are actively engaged in the learning process. Ms. Mezey has really enjoyed seeing her students grow academically from the beginning of the year to the end. She will miss the supportive staff here at Floris and the wonderful parent community. Ms. Mezey will be moving back to the Pittsburg area where she will be pursuing a teaching position. We will certainly miss her.
ATTENTION Floris Volunteers! Next week, June 3 – June 7, we will be honoring you and showing our thanks. When you come into the school to volunteer please look for the table with water and treats. We are so grateful for all you have done for us. Our school and community continues to thrive because of all of your time and dedication to our school.
Our end of year is fast approaching. The last day of school is Thursday, June 13. Students will be dismissed three hours early at 1:00 PM. As has been standard policy, we will not be able to accept bus notes on this day. Please make the necessary arrangements for this early dismissal. Immediately following dismissal, all Floris staff will be attending a required meeting.

Class Placement for 2019-2020 - Deadline May31st
If you have information to share regarding your child’s placement, please email Mrs. Porter at Parent_input@fcps.edu by close of business today, May 31st, 2019. (Note, there is an underscore after ‘Parent’ and before ‘input’). Please remember that we do not take requests for specific teachers as we base our decisions on individual student strengths and instructional needs. As a note for you to be aware, grade level assignments for staff are sometimes modified due to late enrollments, unforeseen changes, and other considerations. Staff assignments are determined at the end of the summer. Staff members have been directed not to give out information about student placement in order to eliminate last minute surprises when changes must be made due to staffing issues.

Big Truck Day - Tuesday, June 4th
Tuesday, June 4th will be our annual Big Truck Day! Because of all of the participating "trucks" we ask parents to please consider sending your students to school on the bus to lower the volume of cars at Kiss 'n Ride. If you must use Kiss 'n Ride, please be patient and be aware of the trucks entering and setting-up. Thank you for your continued support.

Movie Night – TONIGHT Friday, May 31st 5:40 p.m.
Let’s celebrate the end of SOLs with a Movie Night TONIGHT Friday, May 31st. Doors will open at 5:40 p.m. Show time is 6 p.m. Bring the whole family along with your pillows and blankets! Wear your pajamas! Enjoy pizza, popcorn and other confections sold by the 6th grade. CASH ONLY $6/person (4 for $20). Both movies will be raffled off at the end of the night! Raffle tickets $1. Parents, please remember, you must accompany your child. This is NOT a drop off event.
PTA Summer Book Swap – June 3rd – 7th
The PTA annual Summer Book Swap is happening NOW! Book collection ends today and the book swap cart will visit classrooms next week, June 3rd to 7th. This event is for Kindergarten to 6th grade. Please email Pam Mika with any questions.
Ice Cream Social – Friday, June 7th
Come one come all to the Floris PTA Ice Cream Social on Friday, June 7th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in the Floris Cafeteria and on the playground. Ice cream and topping will be provided courtesy of the Floris PTA. Bring a chair and relax with friends and neighbors while the children play. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Thank you so much to our amazing parent volunteers! Please sign up to help out!
Volunteers Needed – PTA Committees, Executive Board & Chair Positions
Are you looking for a way to get more involved in Floris PTA? Do you love Floris ES and want to learn more about how you can support your child's education? WE WANT YOU! We are currently recruiting volunteers for our Nominating Committee and our Audit Committee. There will also be several open positions for the 2019-2020 school year.
