Justice Newsletter - May 26, 2019

A Note From Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I hope that you are finding time to relax and smile. Last week was incredibly busy at Justice. We had the region quarterfinals for baseball and girls soccer, as well as the boys soccer first round regionals. In addition, our guitar and bands had their Spring concerts. Drama hosted their Thespian awards night and summer school registration night was a huge success. Next week promises to be just as busy. We are scheduled for our Spring Orchestra Concert on Tuesday, the Spring Choral Concert on Wednesday, Varsity Awards Ceremony on Thursday and Film Festival on Friday.

Our seniors begin their final exams on Wednesday the 29th. In addition, Seniors will be able to start turning their laptop’s in Tuesday 5/28 and Wednesday 5/29.

Everyday counts. Attendance is important. As we conclude another school year, here are some important school attendance reminders:

  • FCPS will continue to monitor your child’s attendance up to the last day of school, which is June 13. Please note earlier dates for graduating seniors.
  • Notifications will continue if your child has not arrived at school or class as expected.
  • Please continue to contact the school via the attendance line or email if your child will be absent. The school attendance contact information can be found on each school’s web page.
  • The calendar for the 2019-20 school year has been posted. Make plans to have your child back at school, ready to learn, starting on August 26!

More information about the FCPS attendance policy will be available at the start of the new school year.

Have a fantastic rest of your long weekend! See you Tuesday.

Seat Belt Awareness Campaign

One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up. On Tuesday, May 28th. FCPD will  be conducting a seat belt awareness campaign during our morning arrival. FCPD will be setting up a checkpoint at the entrance of the parking lot to check for seat belt adherence. As drivers/passengers pull into the parking lot, they will receive a Slurpee voucher if found in compliance. The entire event should be from 7:20 - 8:00 AM. The purpose of this event is not to give out enforcement tickets but rather reinforce the importance of seat belt safety.

Wolf Time Lesson

This week our final Wolf Time lesson for the year will be held on Tuesday and students will be presented with some tips to prepare for their upcoming final exams. The seniors will participate in a senior meeting during Wolf Time to hear reminders to help get them through these last two weeks of school and prepare for all of the activities which will occur the final week of school, culminating with graduation and the All Night Grad Party.

All-Night Graduation Party (ANGP) Volunteers Needed

Justice Volunteers

Each year, the PTSA fundraises all year to pay for an All-Night Graduation Party (ANGP) for seniors on the night of their graduation. This annual event is part of a statewide effort to provide an all-night alcohol- and drug-free party on one of the highest risk evenings of the year. A large amount of planning and expense is required to provide the venue, food, security and entertainment for this event.  We also count on the help of DOZENS of parent volunteers to provide the security and supervision required by the county. For families of seniors, graduation weekend is often complicated by events, celebrations, last-minute errands and houseguests.  For this reason, we appeal to the families of underclassmen to help staff the party.  The good news is that graduation is on a Friday this year! Some shifts are early, some are late; there’s something for everyone.  Please sign up to help keep our seniors safe on graduation night:  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4eaaaf2ba6f58-volunteers.

Spring Junior Unit

On May 28th and 29th, Student Services will be going into junior history classes to share tips with students about to navigate the Rising Seniors’ Next Steps Google Site to learn about necessary steps to take to pursue their post-secondary plans. Students must be logged into their fcpsschools.net account to access the site so please review together with your child. During the lesson, students will learn more about the JHS Senior Packet, internal processes for requesting transcripts, and what steps they need to be taking now depending on their post high school plans.

Topics addressed by this lesson include, but are not limited to, opioids; alcohol; vaping; marijuana; physical, emotional, and social impacts; as well as community resources. The junior class will be presented this lesson on Friday, May 31st (rescheduled from January).

Academic and Career Plan (ACP) Parent Verification - Juniors

This year, your child continued to develop an Academic and Career Plan (ACP) that supports their current work as well as helps them plan for the future. This plan connects to the Fairfax County Public Schools strategic plan, supports Portrait of a Graduate attributes, and is also required by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). VDOE requires that the student’s parent or guardian review this plan. When reviewing the plan with your child, you can coach him or her to make decisions about college and careers that match his or her personal strengths, interests, and goals, recognizing there are multiple pathways to success. Please have your child log into his or her ACP in Family Connection and, or if you have a Blackboard Parent View account, you can log into your account. Together, with your child, once in Naviance, click the “about me” tab and scroll down to “portfolio.” Once you click on the portfolio, you can view all of the work that has been completed by your child. Once you have reviewed your child’s plan, use this link or this Google form to complete the verification form. The completion of this form will serve as your signature. This must be completed by Wednesday, July 10, 2019. For more information about your child’s ACP, visit the ACP website.

Course Verification Letter & Intention Form

Parents of underclassmen will be receiving a mailing which includes important information about your child’s selected courses for the 2019-2020 school year as well as the Student Intention for the Next School Year form. Only complete this form if your child will not attend Justice HS for the 2019-2020 school year. Completed forms should be returned to Student Services by Friday, June 7, 2019. All student course requests can be accessed through the SIS Parent Account. Please review these selected courses carefully with your child and should you find any errors, by Friday, June 7, 2019 please contact your child’s counselor by email or a signed and dated note explaining the error and how it should be corrected.

Planet Fitness - Students Work Out for Free

From May 15 - September 1, teens ages 15-18 work out at Planet Fitness for free! Visit any Planet Fitness location in the US and Canada. Teens under 18 must bring a parent/guardian to sign up. Once the parent/guardian waiver is signed for teens under 18, teens can workout alone. Students who are already 18 do not need a parent or guardian to be present during the sign-up process.
