Renovation Update

Last week work began on the new Cougar Path and new ticket booth for the athletic complex.  In addition, the new fencing around the baseball field began to go up.  The crews continued to work on the additions, including completing rough-in plumbing, and electrical work.  In the new main office area, door frames have been installed.  The concrete was poured for Oakton Hall and steel work continued for the library and lecture hall.

Inside, the cafeteria kitchen was closed down to begin the renovation of the space.  Students will still have access to purchase breakfast and lunch, however, for the remaining weeks of school there will be fewer options available.  The snack bar will also remain open for students.

General Information

End of Year Schedule

The entire end-of-year schedule for Oakton High School can be found on our website.  As a reminder, due to our graduation time slot of 9:30am we will not have school on Thursday, June 6.  Please note that the last day of school, June 13, students will be released at 10:10am.  The Presentations of Learning schedule has been posted on the website.  The initial page explains the background and provides general information.  A detailed calendar for each grade level is available at the bottom of the page.

SOL Testing Schedules/Calendar

Last week we began our large-scale SOL testing.  On April 29th, all students in SOL classes were emailed through their FCPS accounts of their testing schedule letters. Each letter included testing statuses, dates, time periods, locations, and accommodations, if applicable. It also included a testing calendar for planning purposes. Paper copies of the letter were sent out to teachers on May 1st for distribution. Please touch base with your student concerning his or her testing schedule.  If you have any questions about the schedule, testing status, or accommodations, please reach out to your student's counselor or Assessment Coach Molly Brady (mpbrady1@fcps.edu).

The SOL testing calendar can be found in its entirety on the Oakton website

Clinic: Medication Pick-Up Reminder

ALL medications need to be picked up no later than 10:30 AM on June 13, 2019.  Medication left in the clinic after 10:30 AM on June 13 cannot be saved and will be discarded according to FCPS and FCHD policy. Earlier pickup of medications is encouraged during clinic hours: M-F 8–3.   Pick up of prescription medication is restricted to PARENTS ONLY. Pick up of over-the-counter (OTC) medication is allowed for High School students with the following conditions:

o   Parent permission is required:  a written note with student or an email to cmagnotti@fcps.edu

o   Student pickup of OTC medication is restricted to the end of the school day directly after dismissal.

New medication authorization forms are required for each school year.  Forms can be located at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/forms   If you have any questions please call Christina Magnotti, School Health Aide 703-319-2710.

Early Checkout Requests

Every year a handful of students request to checkout from school early.  We have uploaded the request form and general guidelines to our website.  Forms can also be picked up at the Attendance Office.

Morning Attendance Calls

The morning attendance telephone calls, texts and e-mails for reporting student absences will not occur for middle and high schools during AP, IB and SOL testing from Monday, April 29, 2019 through Friday, June 7, 2019. Students involved in testing are often in designated testing sites within the school during the normal attendance-taking time, so morning attendance notifications will be suspended. The evening attendance notifications will remain in place.

Madison Summer Academy

Madison High School will host the Madison Summer Academy from Monday, June 24 through Thursday, July 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., daily.

The Madison Summer Academy provides summer acceleration in Honors Geometry, Health & PE 9, or Health & PE 10 for eligible FCPS students who are current or incoming students at Madison, Marshall, McLean, and Oakton High School.

FCPSOn Update

Last week high school families received an email from FCPS further explaining the transition to FCPSOn for all high schools.  To build upon that, we have created a FCPSOn page on Oakton’s website. On this site, you will find helpful information including: the vision for FCPSOn in the county and Oakton HIgh School, our  distribution plan, and the rationale for using a school device. The site also includes a form that will allow you to submit questions that you may have.

Students received a brief presentation in their advisory classes, and will learn more about FCPSOn during school on June 10-12. Rising 9th graders will learn more during their orientation in August, before the start of school.  Students will receive their laptops on August 26 or 27 during Advisory.
