RCMS Awarded Highest Accolade

We are proud to announce that our school earned the 2019 Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence.  This is an annual recognition given by the Virginia Department of Education through the Virginia Index of Performance Awards. RCMS is one of only five schools in the Commonwealth to earn this award for meeting certain academic standards.  Furthermore, it is a marker of the outstanding commitment and enthusiasm shown by our students and staff.  You can read more about this award at:

After School Program Survey

Below is a link for a quick survey about the Middle School After-School Program. The survey should take no longer than 5-10 minutes to complete. The survey is an important component of the after-school program evaluation and is critical for future funding. The more responses we receive, the more valuable and reliable the data. The responses not only allow us to assess the impact of the after-school program but they help drive program improvement and program quality.   This survey has been approved by the FCPS Internal Survey Review Committee.  Seal  Approval  Number 19225.`

Survey Approval Seal #19225

Over 95% of our students participated in the after-school program this school year, with over 22,000 occurrences of students staying after-school.  Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School After-School Program!

All survey responses are due by the last day of school, June 14

Rising 7th and 8th Graders

Summer Reading Assignment

We wanted to share with you the summer reading assignment for next year. We would like you all to read at least ONE new (to you) book of your choice during the summer. Not sure what book to read? Check out this site to help you decide: http://bit.ly/WhatToReadNext. Our goal is to promote reading for pleasure. Whether you’re on a plane, in the car, at the beach, pool, or in the comfort of your own home, it’s great to have a book in hand! At the beginning of the school year, your English teacher will share with you an assignment that you will complete to share about the book you read. We are so excited to see what everyone picks to read over summer!

Student Services Updates

HS Credit Course Expunge Process: High school credit courses taken in grades 7 and 8 become part of the student’s high school transcript and are included in the calculation of the high school Grade Point Average (GPA) and weighted as such. Virginia state and FCPS regulations permit parents/guardians of a middle school student who has completed a high school credit course to have that course expunged from the student’s record.

The request to remove a course from the transcript must be made in writing to the middle or high school that the student will attend the following year and prior to the end of the first nine weeks of the school year.

See Request to Expunge High School Courses Taken in Middle School, Form. If you have questions or concerns regarding this, please contact your child’s middle school counselor no later than June 13.

Student Intention Forms:  Moving this summer?  If your family plans include relocation, please notify us by completing the Intention Form and send it to Ms. Andrea Tawil  ajtawil@fcps.edu at your earliest convenience.

Medication Pick Up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your physician. Over-the-counter medication given for headache, muscle pain, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps and antibiotic or anti-viral medication do not need a physician signature. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form.

Over-the-counter medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. All prescription medication, including physician’s samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or physician. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time interval for administration.

If your child will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, your existing long-term medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Your cooperation will ensure that we can safely give your student his or her medication. If you have any questions, please contact your school health room aide, at 703-925-3610.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a good summer.

Yearbooks

A limited number of surplus yearbooks will be sold on a first come, first served basis.  Students may reserve a copy of the yearbook by bringing $35.00 exact change or a check payable to RCMS to the Cafeteria during their lunch period.  Reservations will be taken until all surplus yearbooks are sold.
