FSES students are continuing to have a wonderful time learning Spanish as the end of the school year approaches. Using different strategies, the students have been developing the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing the Spanish language. Kindergarten through six grade students are able to write simple sentences and short texts for different purposes and audiences.

Kindergarten students are learning about animals and plants, “animales y plantas”. They identified different types of plants and talked about how colorful flowers can be. They also created crafts to review the parts of the body, colors, days of the week, and months of the year. Everyone is now able to sing “Feliz Cumpleaños” in the Spanish language. |
First graders had the opportunity to learn about pets, “las mascotas”. They focused on six animals: dog, cat, bird, fish, lizard and hamster. Students learned about each pet: what it looks like, how it moves, and whether it lives on land or water. The first graders are currently learning about the cardinal, “el cardenal”. The students can write and identified its colors, food, and habitat. |
Second grade students pretended to travel to the jungle, “la selva”. They learned about animals with camouflage, “animales con camuflaje”. The students will finish the year learning about monarch butterflies, “las mariposas monarca”. The second graders will write and identify its colors. They will also learn about the countries through which it migrates, its food, and its habitat.
Third graders learned that soil and water are the natural resources of our planet. They identified the basic parts of a plant, as well as the needs of a plant to survive. They experimented with different soils to see which was best for watering plants less frequently.
Fourth grade students learned how to predict the weather. They created different instruments like a thermometer and anemometer. They also identified and compared weather tools used by people in the U.S. and other countries. |
Fifth graders are studying the science of sound. They experimented with three states of matter through which sound can travel. They built a telephone using cups and string, used balloons to hear how sounds travels in air, and played songs on a glass of water xylophone. |

Sixth grade students learned about the importance of water and the consequences of its pollution, “contaminacion”. Students explored why water is essential to life. They also learned various Spanish action words relating to water usage around the house. The students were challenged to write messages in Spanish to persuade others against the pollution of our school and planet.
